Falerum combines diverse landscapes with an accessible regional history. Those looking for an apartment or holiday home for their vacation can choose between hikes, water-based experiences, viewpoints and cultural and historical discoveries. This makes the area especially suitable for travel plans that alternate between active days and leisurely sightseeing.

Hiking, Views and Water

The 5.2 km Seboklint loop leads from Falerum to the summit of Mount Seboklint. The Östgötaleden trail also begins with the Falerum–Åtvidaberg stage at Falerum Travel Centre. After about 1 km, this stage crosses the Storån and then continues along a gravel road towards Gärdserum.

For longer hiking ideas, the Tjustleden trail connects from Falerum and runs through the entire municipality of Västervik. On the Falerum–Rumma stage, there is also a choice between the main trail to the Dacke Skans hillfort and the paved road towards Rumma. These different route options help you tailor your day plan to your preferred type of trail and destination, without making every outing the same.

The Storån near Falerum is protected by the Storån vid Falerum Natura 2000 site and lies within the area of national interest known as Uknadalen. Falerum bathing area offers sweeping views across Uknadalen and Lake Åkervristen. It has a bathing jetty, changing rooms, a barbecue area and an accessible dry toilet, which is open in summer. The Ekhultebergen nature reserve is also located about 1 km from Falerum, along the road towards Hannäs.

Traces of Craftsmanship and History

Falerum’s industrial history can be seen, among other places, at the Mariedal paper mill, which was founded in 1815 in the upper industrial area of Falerum. In northern Falerum, an information board describes the industrial heritage of this area. Wiaholms Garvaregård offers another historical focus, with a history dating back to the 1740s. At the tannery museum, visitors can follow the transformation of raw hides into leather at the original site.

The history of rural architecture is also represented: Bortgården on the outskirts of Falerum is a representative and well-preserved example of farmsteads from the 18th and 19th centuries. The hillfort on Dackeberget, directly south of Falerum, is strategically situated and offers views across Uknadalen. Dacke Skans preserves the remains of an old fortification there. From Falerum, Dacke Skans can be reached via the Östgötaleden trail, about 600 m away; from the fortification, there are views of Falerum, Uknadalen and Lake Åkervristen.

Another feature of the surrounding area is the stone arch bridge over the Storån near Falerum, which is classified as a Class 1B bridge. Gärdserum is also home to a three-nave church in the Neo-Gothic style with 20 small exterior towers.

Plan Falerum as Your Base

For getting there, it is worth noting that the Kustpilen train service between Linköping and Västervik stops in Falerum. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether hiking trails, views of the water, industrial heritage or historic buildings should be the main focus. This creates a suitable basis for a trip with varied daily rhythms: a section of the Östgötaleden, time at the bathing area or a cultural and historical discovery can each be planned as a separate vacation day.
