Åtvidaberg combines a distinctive industrial history with walking trails, oak landscapes and experiences at Lake Bysjön. Anyone planning a trip with varied ideas for each day will find both historical themes and routes through the countryside, as well as opportunities to enjoy the water. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore decide whether culture, hiking, nature or a stay by the lake should be the main focus.

Industrial history and special places

Åtvidaberg’s industrial setting is of great social and industrial-historical interest. This character is particularly evident in the houses on Verksgatan: Åtvidabergs Kopparbruk had them built as workers’ housing between 1777 and 1792. Another historical facet is represented by the villa on the shore of Lake Bysjön. The building is q-listed and has a garden.

In the centre of Åtvidaberg, the ÅSSA Industrial and Motor Museum presents technical inventions, classic vehicles and the local industrial history. The exhibits include cars, hot-bulb engines, lubrication systems, signalling equipment, points, and historical typewriters and calculating machines. The Åtvidaberg School Museum is also located in the same premises. The Kulturcentrum is situated in the industrial-historical districts and includes, among other things, a museum and an exhibition hall.

One of the most unusual attractions is the sun cannon. It is a sundial in a tower that was built in the mid-19th century as part of the English park at Adelsnäs. Åtvidaberg is also home to the only functioning sun cannon in the world. From 1 May to 31 August, it fired a midday salute every day at 1 p.m.; from around 12:45 p.m., a guided presentation on the history and operation of the cannon was available at the tower. For planning purposes, you should regard this time information as seasonal.

Trails through oak landscapes and the surrounding area

Valuable parts of the nationally significant oak landscape lie within the built-up area of Åtvidaberg. The Åtvidsnäs nature reserve is located immediately beside the town and features grazed pastureland, deciduous groves and ancient oaks. If you prefer a manageable circular route with informative stops, you can plan the approximately 1.5-kilometre Ekwandring, with its five information boards. The Hälsans stig walking trail is about 7 kilometres long and begins at Gamla Torget.

The Östgötaleden also leads to Åtvidaberg. The Falerum–Åtvidaberg section ends at Edbergafältet, beyond Lake Bysjön. From there, it is about 1.8 kilometres on foot to Åtvidabergs resecentrum for travellers arriving by train or bus. If you would like to plan your trip around this section, you can also discover Falerum.

Edbergafältet is a recommended starting point for the Bysjön runt circular route. There are car parks, a bathing area and a toilet there. Humpa Discgolfpark can be reached on foot or by bicycle from the central part of Åtvidaberg.

Lake Bysjön, canoe tours and relaxing activities

There are various ways to experience Lake Bysjön. The music boat E/S Vågspelet offers guided tours departing from Tornbryggan and provides views of Åtvidaberg from the lakeside. Solkanonklubben’s canoe rental service provides stable Canadian canoes for shorter tours lasting a few hours or longer day trips.

At Bysjöbadet, located in the built-up area of Åtvidaberg near the sun cannon, there is an accessible bathing area and car parking nearby. Further variety is provided by the Almrundan, with artworks and Hochstubben, as well as information about the artists and audio content at the individual stops. The Harmonirundan follows illuminated paths in Åtvidaberg and Grebo; signs guide visitors through simple exercises for calm and relaxation. It comprises 12 signs with different exercises. For an active round, there is also an adventure-golf course with 12 holes, three of which have an Åtvidaberg theme.
