Holiday apartment in Hällefors: Nature, Silverleden and lakes
Hällefors combines expansive nature with traces of Swedish silver mining and special places for active days. Marshes, rivers, lakes, and old cultural landscapes lie alongside trails, historic sites, and traditional culinary destinations. The 65-kilometre Silverleden hiking trail starts and ends at Hurtigtorpet in Hällefors. Along its route, the trails pass through areas where silver mining was extensive in the 17th century; at some points, hikers can replenish their water supplies.
Nature
Parts of the Knuthöjdsmossen nature reserve belong to the European Union’s Natura 2000 network. The designation of this area is SE0240037. In the northern part, a boardwalk runs through the marsh. The first approximately 400 metres are particularly wide and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Knuthöjdsmossen is also a breeding area for red-necked grebes. The best chances of seeing these birds are in April and May.
Björskogsnäs presents a different type of landscape. The nature reserve is an old cultural landscape with species-rich flora shaped by centuries of mowing and grazing. The lady’s-slipper orchid attracts many visitors every year. A 1.3-kilometre circular trail runs through the area. From the Björskogsnäs car park, an additional one-kilometre footpath leads to the nature reserve.
Water and trails
The Nittälven nature reserve encompasses an unregulated river with rapids, waterfalls, and calmer stretches of water. Paddling on the Nittälven is often best in April and May, when the spring high water provides a naturally increased water level. From the Kolbron entrance, a marked trail follows the Nittälven: it runs seven kilometres north towards Kaljoxadalen and south to Römyren.
The municipality of Hällefors is home to more than 400 lakes, ponds, and running waters where fishing is possible. Grythyttans badplats is also located by a lake: the bathing beach with its jetty is on Torrvarpen.
Activities in every season
Hurtigtorpet offers activities all year round. In summer, there are exercise trails ranging from 1.5 to 15 kilometres, an outdoor fitness area, and an 18-hole disc golf course. In winter, the exercise trails become well-prepared ski tracks; there is also a sledding hill.
Culture and mining history
The Silvergruvorna preserve visible evidence of the history of silver mining, which was mainly carried out here in the 17th and 18th centuries. Silvergruvan was Sweden’s second-largest silver mine; only the Sala silver mine was larger. A marked trail through the cultural landscape of the Silvergruvorna leads to a viewpoint with a picnic table. Silverleden also connects nature and history, as its route passes through areas once shaped by silver mining.
Hällefors is also home to Sweden’s oldest public park, Krokbornsparken. In Grythyttan, a well-preserved village and church centre can be seen. The buildings reflect the Bergslagen style, while the wooden houses are characterised by the architectural forms of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Måltidens Hus originally represented Sweden at the 1992 World Expo in Seville. In 1994, the building was relocated from Spain to Grythyttan. Since the beginning of the 1970s, Grythyttan has been a centre that particularly preserves and develops local products and traditions.
