Holiday apartment in Degerfors: Nature, Lakes and Culture

In the Sveafallen Nature Reserve, the landscape preserves traces of the Ice Age, including potholes and erratic boulders.

Nature and Hiking

Sveafallen has marked hiking trails: an easy loop of approximately 1.4 kilometres leads through Domedagsdalen, while a more challenging route of approximately 5.3 kilometres runs around Bergtjärn and the watershed point. Länstrafiken bus routes 502 and 593 stop at the Sveafallen bus stop north of the nature reserve.

Gällberget Nature Reserve is located in the boulder-rich southern Kilsbergen area known as Fasaskogen. Its forests have remained comparatively little altered due to the limited amount of forestry. Marked hiking routes lead through the area for more than 3 kilometres and for just over 4 kilometres; there is also an easy route of approximately 2 kilometres to Eriks huggarkoja. Gällberget also preserves traces of charcoal-burning sites and the remains of an old peat stable.

Vargavidderna Nature Reserve has two marked trails: one leads around the lake, while the other leads to an observation tower and picnic area. There are also equipped fireplaces. Wolves and lynx are regularly found in the reserve. Extensive marshes, boulder-rich natural forests and the observation tower characterise the area; the tower is recommended for birdwatching. In spring, the calls of black grouse can be heard there, and in summer, the calls of cranes.

In Lidetorpsmon Nature Reserve, in the Lokaåsen area, there is a 46-metre-deep, completely dry kettle hole formed by dead ice. A marked trail and two picnic areas complement the nature reserve.

Lakes and Swimming Areas

Stora Degernäs is a sandy beach on Lake Möckeln with a jetty, parking spaces, toilets, a dog beach and a barbecue area. Lilla Degernäs is an accessible swimming beach with a ramp, floating bathing jetty, mini-golf course and playground next to Degernäs Camping. Gryten has a small swimming area as well as a hiking trail around the lake with several barbecue areas and wind shelters.

Culture and History

Kulturcentrum Berget is located in former workers’ housing dating from the 1870s and includes, among other things, a café, craft shops and small stores. The cultural centre also includes a small museum showing how families lived in the 1870s. Bread is still baked in the bakery using traditional methods.

Nysunds kyrka in the village of Åtorp is a wooden church completed in 1639; the church is located in the vicinity of Degerfors Municipality. It preserves intact ceiling paintings from 1747, created by the Karlstad painter Petter Mård. Degerfors, a church, is also located in the vicinity of Degerfors Municipality.

In the wider regional surroundings of Degerfors Municipality are Arbetarmuseet Gråbo, a museum, and Alfred Nobels Björkborn, a museum. Fotbollsmuseet i Degerfors presents the history of football through memorabilia, jerseys, photographs and trophies. Guided tours were regularly offered there, explaining the exhibitions and the stories behind the objects.
