Holiday apartment in Luleå – archipelago, cathedral and Gammelstad

Luleå Cathedral was inaugurated in 1893 and is Sweden’s northernmost and youngest cathedral. As a neo-Gothic red-brick church, it shapes the city’s cultural character with a distinctive architectural feature.

Culture and history

An important historical site is the church town of Gammelstad. It is considered the best-preserved example of this unique type of church town in northern Scandinavia and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. More than 400 church cottages have been preserved, while the tradition of staying overnight temporarily continues. The church in Gammelstad has stood in the same place since 1492 and is still in use.

The history of the landscape is also closely linked to Gammelstad. Land uplift made Gammelstad’s harbour too shallow, which is why the town was moved closer to the coast in 1649. The Gammelstad Visitor Center offers guided tours throughout the year. In Hägnan, an open-air cultural history museum, the public is welcome every day during the summer season. At the farmsteads, actors dressed in period clothing convey an impression of times gone by. Visitors can also observe animals in the enclosures, walk on stilts and play with children.

Nature

Luleå is surrounded by an archipelago with 1,312 islands, relatively untouched vegetation and important bird-breeding grounds. The islands, coastal landscape and wildlife are therefore among the clearly identifiable features of the area. The archipelago offers diverse fishing opportunities for pike, perch, whitefish and sea trout.

Luleå’s archipelago is accessible year-round. In summer, excursion boats operate daily; in winter, cleared ice roads lead to some of the larger islands. These seasonally varying forms of access are thus an integral part of the description of this island world.

Museums and events

The Municipality of Luleå offers concerts, musical services and other musical events in Luleå Cathedral Parish. The Norrbotten Museum caters to visitors of all ages with guided tours, workshops and lectures. Its exhibitions cover Norrbotten, cultural heritage and the wider world.

Teknikens Hus is a science centre for all age groups, focusing on natural sciences, technology and mathematics. Visitors can operate trucks, forestry machines and harvesting machinery, as well as experience a work assignment in a mine or steelworks using a VR headset. Together with the offerings of the Norrbotten Museum, this creates a broad spectrum ranging from regional history and practical science to international topics.

Cycling

Luleå has mountain-bike trails at Ormberget, in Karlsvik and in Måttsund. The trails are suitable for both experienced riders and beginners. In addition, Luleå has well-developed urban cycling routes and around 170 kilometres of cycle paths.

The Luleå Tourist Center provides information about archipelago boats, attractions, excursions and events, and supplies brochures and maps. Hemmagastronomi provides a culinary complement with an evening menu offering a wide selection of intermediate or small dishes based on Nordic and international cuisine.
