Arvidsjaur combines Sámi cultural history with nature reserves, ancient forests and distinctive landscapes. In Lappstaden, you can visit a Sámi church town, while Gallejaur preserves a well-preserved, culture-shaped landscape. Reivo offers views of lakes, wetlands, natural forests and low mountains. Culture and history
Lappstaden is a Sámi church town and represents a Sámi building tradition. The site comprises 85 buildings, including 31 wooden kåtas and 54 guesthouses known in Sámi as aittor. The annual cultural calendar includes the Storstämningen festival, which takes place on the last Sunday in August.
The Gamla Prästgårdsområdet site is also connected with the history of the area: the first church on the site was inaugurated in 1607. The present Gamla Prästgården building was constructed in 1891. Guided tours with local cultural history guides are offered at Gamla Prästgården by prior arrangement.
Nature and landscape
Gallejaur represents a connection between landscape and settlement history. The area is considered a well-preserved, culture-shaped landscape that reflects the settler era of the 19th century and the development into an agricultural cultural landscape in the 20th century. Gallejaur has nine farms with surrounding grazing meadows and hay meadows. The Gallejaur nature reserve is also home to trees more than 300 years old.
Several paths lead through the landscape and the nature reserve: a hiking trail in Gallejaur leads to a summit cabin in the Gallejaur nature reserve. A path also leads from Gallejaur into the forest of the Gallejaur nature reserve. An information building with a café is located at the entrance to Gallejaur.
The Reivo nature reserve comprises lakes, ancient natural forests, wetlands and low mountains. It has numerous hiking trails, rest areas and overnight cabins. Visitor facilities also include a fire pit, an information board, parking areas, and rest shelters and wind shelters. Reivo’s natural forests provide habitat for a great variety of predators, birds, insects, fungi, lichens and plants.
Trails and visitor facilities
Vittjåkk-Akkanålke is a low mountain area close to settlements, surrounded by an extensive forest landscape. The Vittjåkk-Akkanålke area has hiking trails, fire pits and wind shelters for visitors. There is also a ski facility there.
Getting there and regional impressions
Within Arvidsjaur Municipality, the Inlandsbanan railway stops at five stations. During the summer season, Arvidsjaur can be reached by the Inlandsbanan on the route between Kristinehamn and Gällivare. In addition, European route E45 runs through the centre of Arvidsjaur.
Individual experiences and offerings also complement the area’s local and landscape impressions. On the return journey, there was an approximately one-hour stop at Storavan, with the opportunity to swim and grill sausages. A steam train journey between Arvidsjaur and Slagnäs was announced for summer 2026. Good local cuisine is available at many places around Arvidsjaur.
