Kulla’s history can be traced through several historical clues: early evidence of farming, a mill documented in 1697, the legend of Ryssmuren, and dated bird observations. The history of agriculture here goes back at least to 1625. Kulla is also marked on a map of the eastern section of the Glasriket riding trail. Together, these themes offer different perspectives on the place—from agricultural land use to local tradition.

Agriculture at key points in time

Kulla’s agricultural history goes back at least to 1625. A new farmer of the farmstead, named “Niels i Kullan,” is recorded for that year. In 1641, Kulla was divided among three farmers. A record from the mill commission lists four farmers in Kulla in 1697. These dates highlight different aspects: first a name, then a division, and later the number of farmers. The named reference adds a personal trace to the later figures. This makes it possible to consider the agricultural past not only through dates, but also through the people and forms of farming.

Mill, stream, and legend

A mill called “Kullas kvarn” is documented in Kulla in 1697. The stream at the mill flows into Råsbäcken; it is probably the upper or lower Kullabäcken. The mill thus connects a historical economic activity with a specifically named watercourse, although the exact identification of the stream remains uncertain.

Local legend traces the name Ryssmuren to Russian prisoners sentenced to forced labor who are said to have built the wall sometime in the early 19th century. As a piece of local tradition, the story links the wall to an approximate time period. It adds a different kind of local memory to the concrete dates associated with farming.

Earlier routes and a mapped riding trail

In earlier times, people rode from Kulla to church. Kulla is also marked on the map of the eastern section of the Glasriket riding trail. These references relate to different things: one tells of an earlier mode of travel, while the other locates the place on a route map. For a cultural-historical perspective, the earlier ride to church and Kulla’s entry on the riding trail can therefore be considered separately.

Dated bird observations

A bird observation report from 2012 recorded a territorial Eurasian pygmy owl in Kulla, Flerohopp, on September 20. Seven capercaillie reports from this period came from the area between Kulla, Flerohopp, and Gadderåsvägen, north of Stensjön. The records differ in their geographical scope: one observation on a precisely specified date and at a specific place, and several reports from a wider area. Comparing them brings the different perspectives of historical nature observations into focus.
