Åsenhöga brings together church and everyday history with nature experiences that vary by season. Its church history stretches from the medieval church site to the neoclassical Åsenhöga kyrka; the Hembygdspark reflects regional daily life, while a rock formation, a quiet lake and a bathing area offer different attractions. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may be important whether you are planning your stay mainly around culture, the outdoors or a seasonal event.

Churches and Regional Everyday Culture

The historic church site at Åsenhöga ödekyrkogård was laid out in the Middle Ages. The cemetery features a moss-covered stone wall dating from 1789 and a wooden, shingle-roofed lychgate from 1695. Åsenhöga kyrka reflects a different period of construction: the neoclassical church was built between 1856 and 1861. Torsten Hjelm painted its chancel vault between 1935 and 1938. The dates span the 17th-century lychgate, the 18th-century wall, the 19th-century church and the 20th-century chancel painting. This makes it possible to distinguish the building and its decoration by period.

Åsenhöga Hembygdspark reflects life and culture in and around Åsenhöga from the past century to the present day. The park includes an old schoolhouse, a forge, a granary and a root cellar, among other buildings. It also has an old village shop and various exhibitions about life in the Gnosjö region in the past. Åsenhöga Hembygdsmuseum displays the local heritage association’s collection of everyday objects from the surrounding area. The park’s green spaces are ideal for walks and picnics.

Nature Between Rock, Lake and Bathing Area

Bergakungens sal, a rock formation in the forest between Götarp and Åsenhöga, can be reached after a short walk. Södra Trollsjön is considered a secluded, quiet lake in the Åsenhöga area and invites visitors to relax. Götarps badplats on Lake Götarpssjön is outside Åsenhöga and has bathing jetties, changing rooms and play equipment. If these facilities are important to your outing, check their current condition before you travel. The three destinations offer different experiences: a short walk to the rock formation, peace and quiet by the lake, and a bathing area with facilities.

Activities for Different Seasons

Cross-country skiing is possible on the Åsenhöga elljusspår in snowy winters. The Åsenhögaloppet takes place every year in August or September. Alongside a children’s race, there are races over 2.6 km, 4.3 km and 9.1 km. Åsenhöga Brassband also holds concerts every year; its regular concerts include “Musik i sommarkvällen” and “Musik i juletid”. The events therefore differ in how they are scheduled: cross-country skiing depends on snowy winter conditions, the race takes place in late summer, and the concert formats bring a summery and a Christmas atmosphere.

Accommodation and Travel Planning

When looking for a holiday apartment, the connections you want may also be a factor in your choice. Åsenhöga has bus connections towards Gnosjö and towards Hillerstorp; check the current services before you travel.
