Discover Gotland: Holiday apartment between Visby’s medieval history and protected nature

Gotland combines medieval urban history, protected coastal landscapes, and trails through diverse natural areas. Visby was a former Viking settlement and, from the 12th to the 14th century, the most important center of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic region. Culture

Visby’s 13th-century fortifications, along with more than 200 warehouses and merchants’ homes from the same period, make the city the best-preserved fortified trading town in Northern Europe. The Drotten church ruin was built around 1240 as a parish church for the Germans in Visby. The DBW Botanical Garden in Visby was established in 1855.

The Gotlands Museum opens the ruins of S:t Lars, Drotten, and S:ta Karin in Visby to visitors between May and September. In Fornsalen, Gotland’s oldest cultural history museum, visitors can see Gotland’s unique picture stones. The Spillings Hoard is described worldwide as the largest silver hoard from the Viking Age. The “Skepp & skoj” exhibition conveys knowledge about the world of the Vikings and seafaring to children and families in a playful way. In addition, the Gotlands Museum in Visby offers guided tours between medieval houses, church ruins, and towers of the city wall. During the legend walks, guides lead groups by lantern light into ruins and dark alleys in the evening and tell stories of ghosts and hidden treasures.

There are also places outside the city where history and landscape stand closely together. Norrbys is Gotland’s first cultural reserve and preserves rural environments from the 1940s. A marked nature and cultural trail is accessible to visitors there year-round. Kattlunds in Grötlingbo is one of the best-preserved medieval farms in the Nordic region and has origins dating back to the 12th century. Gotland’s picture stones are among the most remarkable cultural monuments in Northern Europe. Their depictions of solar symbols, animals, and ships provide insight into the island inhabitants’ history, lives, and worldview.

Nature

The Digerhuvud nature reserve stretches along the northwest coast of Fårö. A paved road makes its various areas easy to reach, and visitors can explore the rauks there. The Slite skärgård nature reserve covers more than 6,000 hectares and is Gotland’s only area with an archipelago character. It is accessible to visitors by boat or kayak. On the island of Fjaugen, there is a quay and old fishermen’s huts that are open for overnight stays.

In the Langhammars nature reserve, grass snakes are frequently seen near various wetlands. Thus, alongside the striking coastal formations, protected habitats and their wildlife are also part of Gotland’s character.

Trails

The Naturkartan.se app and website bring together numerous destinations and hiking trails on Gotland; the County Administrative Boards and Region Gotland are involved. Buses stop year-round at more than 20 nature reserves on Gotland, and in summer there are connections to additional areas. Destination Gotland operates ferry services between Visby and Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn, respectively.

Gotland is mostly flat and is recommended as a cycling destination. The Eksta coast is a cycling route in a nature reserve on the western side of Gotland and runs from the fishing village of Djupvik to Hammarudden. For longer distances, the 78-kilometer Östkustenleden hiking trail is also available; it runs from Anga to Närsholm through eight parishes and eight nature reserves.
