Svängsta: River Landscapes, Trails and Industrial Heritage

Svängsta combines the landscape of the Mörrumsån with an unusually tangible chapter of Swedish industrial history. The river flows through the town; at the same time, the Mörrumsåns nedre dalgång nature reserve stretches from Mörrum to the south to Svängsta to the north. Svängsta’s industrial past is associated with specific names and years. The Halda pocket watch factory was founded in Svängsta in 1887. In 1921, Carl August Borgström founded AB Urfabriken by the Mörrumsån in Svängsta, Sweden. The company initially produced pocket watches, telephone timers and taximeters.

The old factory was eventually converted into the ABU Museum, one of Sweden’s most significant industrial museums. At the Abu-museet, you can see how the sought-after pocket watches were made and experience machines from the late 19th century. Those who do not want to limit their trip to landscape experiences will find an informative insight here into the development of the local industry.

The Möllegårdens school museum offers an additional insight into educational history. It includes a classroom, a teacher’s residence and an exhibition room with school materials from different periods. One exhibition is dedicated to all the schools in the municipality. The museum is located in the oldest and best-preserved schoolhouse in Karlshamn Municipality.
