Landscape
Močilnik is a spring valley with rock walls up to 40 m high, also known as Hudičeve skale. Lintvern is a karst swallow hole beneath Jelovec and the source of the Bela stream. The spring ejects water at irregular intervals and may become partially or completely dry between eruptions.
Mali plac is an almost two-hectare raised bog near Bevke and has been designated a nature reserve. The Swamp Dwarfs’ Trail at Mali plac is an easy, 3.2 km hiking trail with an elevation gain of 96 m and a walking time of approximately 2 hours. It begins at Bevke Sports Park, leads via Kostanjevica to the Mali plac nature reserve, and returns to the sports park.
Star maln preserves a mill wheel and a weir from the former mill in the valley of the Bela stream. The Kucler Quarry was declared a natural monument of geological importance in 1991. It is known for deposits of fossil shells and other microfossils; a geological column there displays the rocks of the surrounding area.
The Kotnik-Lenarčič Park in Verd was created by the Kotnik family in the 19th century. The park contains a ginkgo that is now considered one of the older trees of its kind in Europe. Kameni Vrh is a mountain in the vicinity of Vrhnika, as is Ljubljanski Vrh.
History and Culture
A settlement existed in the wider Vrhnika area no later than the middle of the 2nd century BC; in Latinized form, it was called Nauportus. Nauportus was a station on the ancient trade route from Aquileia to Segestika. In the 1st century BC, a Roman part of the settlement developed in the immediate vicinity of Nauportus.
Remains of the Roman defensive wall Claustra Alpium Iuliarum are still visible in the Vrhnika area. Between Verd and Zaplana, it was over 10 km long, approximately 1 m wide, and 2 to 3 m high. The Church of the Holy Trinity above Vrhnika was built around 1640 and contains frescoes by Ogrin and Koželj. In the 18th century, it was a popular pilgrimage destination.
The Lovrenčič House, also known as the Old Post Office, stands on the banks of the Ljubljanica at the site of a harbor that existed until 1790. A mercury warehouse from the period of shipping on the Ljubljanica has also been preserved there. The Mik’lčeva kašča in Verd houses a permanent exhibition with photographs of works by Jožef Petkovšek, as well as changing art exhibitions.
Cankar House is a cultural monument in the center of Vrhnika and stands on the site of the wooden house where Ivan Cankar was born. Cankar House displays historic interiors, or a collection depicting the living conditions of a family on the brink of poverty at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, first editions of Cankar’s works, photographs, as well as self-portraits and drawings; guided tours are available.
Časovna postaja Vrhnika includes an authentically furnished stationmaster’s office with museum objects. An actual steam locomotive is also on display there. A virtual reality journey travels through several eras, from the first traces of humans in prehistoric times to the construction of the first section of Slovenian motorway.
Routes
Po poti Cankarjeve mladosti is a themed trail with 17 stations that tells the life story of Ivan Cankar. The circular cycling route through the Ljubljana Marshes begins and ends in front of the Vrhnika TIC and is 27 km long.
