Holiday apartment in Mežica – Mining heritage and the underground of Peca
The underground of Peca in Mežica is the central point of the cross-border Karawanks UNESCO Global Geopark in Slovenia. Mining history, mineralogical features and unusual routes through the underground shape the experiences brought together here.
Culture
The Mežica Mining Museum is housed in a building in Glančnik that was built in 1928 by the English owners of the mine. Its collections include minerals, ores, fossils and surveying equipment. A former apartment in the museum showcases the living culture of Mežica’s miners from the period before the Second World War.
Another part of the cultural heritage is dedicated to beekeeping. The Čebelarska zbirka Mežica is a permanent exhibition on the beekeeping tradition of Mežica and Koroška. It displays painted beehive front panels and the history of beekeeping up to 1967.
The underground of Peca
The thematic trail in the underground of Peca begins at the information centre of the Karawanks UNESCO Global Geopark in Mežica and then continues by authentic mine train and along a guided route. It passes through tunnels and mine workings created by miners 350 years ago.
The underground mine-train ride in Peca includes a 15-minute journey into the mine. The mine train stops in the Moring section, 600 metres below the surface. During the guided tour in the underground of Peca, an experienced guide presents the work of the miners during various historical periods.
Active experiences
The mining character of Mežica can also be experienced by mountain bike. The Black Hole Trail is suitable exclusively for highly experienced mountain bikers who are accustomed to technically demanding terrain. It crosses five levels and descends by around 150 metres in elevation.
The underground mining cycling tour in the underground of Peca follows a route more than five kilometres long from one valley to the other. Alongside the mine train, this provides another way to traverse the historic underground over a longer distance.
The underground mining kayaking tour in Peca begins at the Mining Museum in Glančnik, Mežica. Participants first descend 95 metres on foot to water level and then paddle through the underground labyrinth. The guided kayaking experience also includes refreshments featuring the Koroška miners’ snack “knapovska malica”.
Mineralogical heritage
The mineralogical heritage includes the Mežica wulfenite deposit. It is considered the richest wulfenite deposit in Europe and one of the best-known in the world.
