The permanent exhibition at Plečnik House focuses on the life and work of Jože Plečnik. Plečnik House in Trnovo consists of three buildings, including Plečnik’s home in a cylindrical extension. The authentic Plečnik House can only be visited as part of guided tours.

Plečnik’s UNESCO World Heritage site in Ljubljana comprises public spaces and public institutions that have been integrated into the city’s existing urban, natural and cultural context. The outdoor spaces of the components of Plečnik’s Ljubljana are open to the public. More than 2,000 years ago, the Roman city of Emona stood in the area of present-day Ljubljana. Metelkova’s history as a cultural centre began in 1993 with the occupation of former military barracks.

Ljubljana Castle stands on a hill above the city and offers views over the city as well as museum exhibitions. The Baroque Church of Our Lady stands at the summit of Šmarna Gora and was built in the first half of the 18th century. The Dragon Bridge is one of Ljubljana’s most important sights and is decorated with famous dragon statues.

Nature

The Tivoli-Rožnik-Šišenski hrib Landscape Park covers around 460 hectares; 74 percent of its area is forested. Rakova jelša City Park is an access point to the Ljubljansko barje Landscape Park. Rožnik is a natural area in Ljubljana for walking and running, crossed by numerous paths and running routes.

The walk to Cankarjev vrh on Rožnik begins at Tivoli Castle at the end of Jakopič Promenade. The Ljubljana Botanical Garden has been in continuous operation since 1810 and contains more than 4,500 plant species, subspecies and forms. Its tropical greenhouse displays more than 380 plant species from tropical regions.

There are approximately 15 well-maintained and marked paths on Šmarna Gora, most of which are relatively easy. Golovec is densely forested and crossed by numerous well-maintained, marked paths. Golovec offers numerous opportunities for walking, hiking, running and cycling.

Active Pursuits

Golovec Trails is an 8-kilometre mountain biking trail park with nine marked routes of all difficulty levels, from green to black. Guided tours, courses and children’s training sessions are offered at Golovec Trails; an enduro competition also takes place there every year as part of Ljubljana MTB Weekend.

The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship is 33 kilometres long, encircles Ljubljana and is intended for hikers and cyclists. The Plečnik Route connects Plečnik’s architectural heritage in Ljubljana and begins and ends at his former home in Trnovo. The Forest Route runs along the edge of Rožnik between Tivoli Park and Mostec.

Ljubljana has around 230 kilometres of designated cycle paths. Bicycles may be used throughout the pedestrian area of the city centre, provided that cyclists ride slowly and give priority to pedestrians. Ljubljana’s compact structure and its green surroundings, which extend into the centre, create good conditions for walking, cycling and many leisure activities.

City and Culinary Delights

The Ljubljanica offers visitors a route along picturesque riverside promenades and through the city’s bridges; boat trips on an excursion vessel are also possible. The November Gourmet Ljubljana programme includes tastings and cooking workshops.

Ljubljana has good road and rail connections; the central Slovenian Jože Pučnik Airport, Ljubljana Airport, is also located near the city.
