History and Culture

Lendava Castle houses permanent museum exhibitions and memorial rooms dedicated to local artists, including György Zala and Štefan Galič. The Lendava Gallery-Museum presents permanent archaeological, historical and ethnological exhibitions as well as a memorial room dedicated to György Zala. Another permanent local-history exhibition is entitled “Civic Life, Printing and Umbrella Manufacturing in Lendava” and is located in a former burgher house at 52 Glavna ulica.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built in 1728 on Čonka Hill, known as Csuka-domb in Hungarian. The mummified body of the military commander Mihael Hadik can be seen in the chapel. Services are held there twice a year: on Trinity Sunday and the Feast of the Guardian Angels.

The Lendava Synagogue serves as a venue for concerts and exhibitions. The current exhibition is dedicated to the history of the Jewish population in the Lendava region. The Jewish cemetery in Dolga vas has 128 inscribed gravestones and, like the synagogue, is protected as a monument.

Views and Nature

The Vinarium Tower offers a 360-degree view over Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia and Austria. Its dome hosts changing exhibitions of local and regional art. A lift goes up to the dome and the open-air viewing platform.

The Vinarium Zipline begins near the Piramida viewpoint and ends near the Vinarium Tower. It is slightly more than 500 metres long and reaches speeds of 50 to 65 kilometres per hour.

Murska šuma is a 361-hectare floodplain forest in the lowlands at the confluence of the Ledava and Mur rivers, south of Pince Marof and Benica. Numerous bird species live there; the area is considered one of Slovenia’s most important ornithological sites. Part of Murska šuma has survived as virgin forest to this day.

Routes and Activities

The marked international EV13 cycle route, the Iron Curtain Trail, runs for 79.3 kilometres between Martinje and Pince in the Slovenian-Hungarian border area. The border trail runs between Dolga vas and Pince along the Slovenian-Hungarian state border, mostly on former border guard paths over the ridges of the Dolgovaške gorice and Lendavske gorice.

The Dolinsko Route begins and ends in Lendava. Among other places, it passes through Trimlini, Petišovci, Benice, Pince-Marof, Pince, Dolina pri Lendavi, Čentiba, Lendavske Gorice and Dolga Vas. Mura Adventures offers cycling tours around Lendava and the Mur through vineyards and deciduous forests, using trekking or electric mountain bikes. Mura Adventures also offers hiking tours along the Mur and around Murska šuma forest.

Terme Lendava is distinguished by its fossil, healing thermal mineral water. In addition to water-based activities, the spa also offers sauna visits as well as relaxation programmes and cosmetic treatments.

Wine and Cuisine

The Lendavska vinska turistična cesta stretches for nine kilometres from Dolga vas to Pince. Its routes lead as far as Dolina, Čentiba and the Dolgovaške gorice hills. Along the Lendava Wine Tourist Road, visitors can stop at one of the wine taverns or excursion farms.

Along the Dolinska pot, local wines and culinary specialities are offered, including organic produce from an organic farm. The Vinarium Festival brings together Bogračfest, the Lendava grape harvest, the celebration of the tower’s anniversary, as well as cultural and culinary events. Bogračfest is considered Slovenia’s largest cooking competition for bograč; visitors can take part in the competition.
