Holiday apartment in Žabnica: Church of St. Ulrich and cycle paths
Žabnica lies on the western edge of the Sorško polje, halfway between Kranj and Škofja Loka. The village combines a traditional religious and local history with an open cultural landscape and cycle connections in several directions. The Church of St. Ulrich, Roman finds, 20th-century monuments and traditional features of the Sorško polje give the village a multifaceted character.
Culture and history
The Church of St. Ulrich was built in 1851 on the site of the old church on piles because the ground was swampy and soft. Its large wooden altar is in the Byzantine style and was made in 1862 by M. Tomc from Ljubljana. A Roman gravestone is built into the church bell tower. A depiction of a soldier, discovered during the restoration of the church in 1993, is also located beneath the bell tower today.
The Church of St. Ulrich in Žabnica is listed as a religious architectural monument under the designation EŠD 2711. The Roman past is also present in the village: remains of a Roman rural estate were found in Žabnica, and the Roman archaeological finds in Žabnica attest to settlement as early as the late Roman period. The Žabnica - Villa rustica in Žabnica archaeological monument area is listed under the designation EŠD 5571.
The built heritage also includes the secular architectural monument group Žabnica - Domačija Žabnica 5, listed under the designation EŠD 21676. Memorial sites complete this picture: The central monument to those who fell in Žabnica was unveiled on 4 July 1957 at a crossroads in the village beside the road from Kranj to Škofja Loka. A memorial plaque on the house at Žabnica 42 marks the place where the first meeting of the Žabnica Liberation Front took place in December 1941.
Landscape
The Sorško polje is characterized by isolated trees, especially lime trees, traditional hayracks and plague shrines. These elements represent a landscape in which natural surroundings, agriculture and traditional forms of remembrance remain visibly side by side.
Cycling
The circular cycle route around the Sorško polje connects Medvode, Kranj and Škofja Loka. In Žabnica, the flat cycle path towards Ljubljana also joins this circular route. This connects the village to two differently routed cycle links in the Sorško polje area.
On site
In front of the Church of St. Ulrich, a paved car park was created and drainage was installed in 2018 and 2019.
