Ilirska Bistrica: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nature

The Snežnik-Ždrocle forest reserve is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests. Of the two Slovenian forest reserves, Snežnik-Ždrocle is the larger, covering 793.9 hectares.

The Mašunska Forest Educational Trail is a 1.7-kilometre circular route of easy difficulty. It showcases the diversity of the Snežnik forests and their wildlife, with a particular focus on wolves, bears and lynx.

Hiking and Cycling

The Sviščaki–Snežnik hiking trail is approximately 5.3 kilometres long and has about 605 metres of elevation gain. The hike from Mašun to Snežnik leads to Snežnik, the highest peak in the Notranjska region.

The Alpina Mediterranean Cycle Route begins or ends in Ilirska Bistrica. The Ilirska Bistrica–Opatija section is approximately 46 kilometres long and runs along quiet paved roads and shorter unpaved sections.

The “K izviru Reke” cycle route follows the Reka River and crosses it several times via small bridges.

Culture and Everyday Life

Prem Castle was first mentioned in 1213, when it belonged to the Lords of Duino. The exhibition “From Crumbs of the Past: Flavours of Home” at Prem Castle presents the diet and everyday life of the population in the Ilirska Bistrica area in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Church of St George has stood in the centre of Ilirska Bistrica since 1752. It houses Baroque altars, a Stations of the Cross painted by Tone Kralj, and a marble sculpture of Mary by France Gorše.

The memorial room of the Zalesje Partisan Hospital in Ostrožno Brdo contains a museum collection about the Partisan hospital, where wounded fighters and local residents were treated during the Second World War.

The Kette Memorial Room is located in the former primary school in Prem, where Dragotin Kette was born.

Škoromatija is listed as intangible cultural heritage in Hrušica (Ilirska Bistrica). A documented ban on dressing up as a “scaramatta” for carnival in 1340 makes the Škoromati one of the oldest carnival figures in Slovenia.

The visitor experience at Kmetija Slavec includes direct contact with goats, chickens, cows, donkeys, sheep and bees.
