Vieska: Nature Reserve, Local History and Cycling Route

Vieska is located in the Danube Lowland, in the central part of Žitný ostrov. The village belongs to the Dunajská Streda District; Žitný ostrov is part of the Danube Lowland. The cadastral area of Vieska is considered fertile and has good pastureland. The entire Vieska planning area belongs to the Žitný ostrov protected water-management area.

Nature

The Klátovské rameno National Nature Reserve extends into the Blatná lúka cadastral area of Vieska; the fifth level of protection applies there. The reserve comprises preserved aquatic vegetation communities and typical floodplain forests. Rare and protected plant and animal species are also found there. The Dunajská Streda District is suitable for walks in floodplain forests and for water sports on the Little Danube.

Culture

Vieska is first mentioned in 1322 under the name Kysfeuldi. The village is home to a stone Pietà dating from 1814. The chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin was built in 1852 by the Rosary Society and rebuilt by the municipality in 1995. The large cemetery cross was erected in 1863 and renovated in 1991. The Vieska World War Memorial stands in the municipal cemetery and dates from 1992. It commemorates local residents who fell in the Second World War. On the grave of the Pivovárcsi teachers’ family, József Pivovárcsi is named as a school director and teacher. For the Vieska spring welcoming festival “Privítanie jari”, planned for 20 March 2026 at 4 p.m. in the cultural centre, bean goulash, sweet and savoury treats, refreshments, historical objects and the sale of Easter decorations had been announced.

Cycling

A route of the Galanta Cycling Circuit, marked with cycling-tour signs, runs through the Vieska planning area along an existing field road. Cycling route 5232 is 27 km long, of which 24 km run through level terrain. This route passes through Vieska for a length of 2.4 km. The different distance figures can be considered separately when planning your day. The total length describes the circuit, while the level section indicates part of its course. The 2.4 kilometres identify the section that passes through Vieska. This keeps the circuit, terrain information and village section readable as separate items and prevents them from being combined into an additional distance figure.
