Holiday apartment in Veľké Orvište – church, history and Záhumnie Lake

Veľké Orvište combines the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with a multifaceted local history and the Záhumnie water body, which serves for recreation, active sports and sport fishing. Culture and activities by the water represent two distinct aspects of the village.

Culture

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands at a crossroads at Barina, within the grounds of the local cemetery, on the roads to Ostrov and Bašovce. It was built in 1743. The single-nave building has a flat ceiling and a semicircular presbytery. In 1940, the church was extended and enlarged by an addition with a square floor plan.

Inside the church, the epitaph of the deceased Baron František Trauttmansdorff recalls a chapter of the local history; it was restored in 2012. The bell tower was built in 1934 from stone taken from a demolished Protestant church and brought from Vrbové. The tower was restored in 2009. The 50-kilogram bell was made by R. Manoušek of Brno; it was donated to the Protestant congregation.

Several traces of different periods converge at the church: the 1743 construction, the 1940 extension, the bell tower built from demolition material and the later restorations. The epitaph and bell supplement the architectural details with personal and communal testimonies. Thus, a single building makes it possible to read together different chapters of the local history and various forms in which it has been handed down.

History

Veľké Orvište is first documented in writing in the so-called Zobor Charter of 1113 under the name villa Rivvis. The earliest settlement identified in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište was located at the Niže cesty site. It belongs to the Lengyel culture and is dated to approximately 3500 BC.

A hoard was also discovered in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište. It consisted of four gold coins and 78 silver coins that had been buried in the 17th century.

The local history has therefore been handed down through various forms of evidence: a written reference, archaeological traces of settlement and a coin hoard concealed at a later date. The Niže cesty site and the hoard belong to different historical periods, while the church and its furnishings add further layers of time. Taken together, these details represent a development that is not limited to a single period of the past.

Water

The recreation and leisure zone in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište is part of the local Záhumnie pond. The pond serves visitors for recreation and active sports. The zone is used by residents of the municipality and visitors from the wider surrounding area.

Záhumnie Lake is a body of standing water with an area of 2 hectares. Its depth ranges from 0.8 to 1.8 metres. The Záhumnie association offers the general public, including non-members, the opportunity to go sport fishing.

On 21 and 22 March 2026, RZ Záhumnie Veľké Orvište held the fishing competition Jarný pstruh XVI. ročník in spinning for trout. The fishing area at RZ Záhumnie Lake in Veľké Orvište can be reached from Piešťany by turning right behind the church towards Pobedím.
