Moravany nad Váhom: Holiday Apartment Between Culture and Nature

Moravany nad Váhom brings together archaeological evidence, sacred architecture, the history of the manor and distinctive landscape features within a compact thematic area. The Moravianska Venuša is a figurine carved from mammoth ivory dating from the Gravettian, discovered in the area of Moravany nad Váhom.

Culture and History

The first documentary mention of Moravany nad Váhom dates from 1348, when it was known as Marwan. The village’s historic buildings include the Kostol sv. Martina z Tours, with a medieval core dating from the 14th century. Its southern chapel was built in 1757 on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century.

The Moravany nad Váhom manor house also reflects several construction phases. Originally, it was a medieval complex consisting of several independent buildings; the manor house acquired its present appearance after a reconstruction at the end of the 16th century. Another historical connection leads to Trhovičná lúka: in the Middle Ages, a frequently used road ran there, connecting Nitra with Moravia.

The area’s transport history also includes a former forest narrow-gauge railway. It connected Moravany nad Váhom with the Jelenie Jamy locality over a distance of 12 kilometres. The railway was built in 1900 and served to transport timber and people from the surrounding mountains.

Nature

Geographically, Moravany nad Váhom lies in the valley of the Striebornica stream at the western foot of the Považský Inovec. On the eastern edge of the village, at the end of Hlboká Street, lies Veľký jarok, also known as Hlboký jarok. The erosion gully in Quaternary loess sediments is up to 20 metres deep and approximately 100 metres long.

Veľký jarok is a protected natural monument with the fourth level of protection and was designated on 1 September 2004. The site is currently accessible to visitors via a turn-off from a green-marked hiking trail. The name Hlboký jarok refers to the same landscape feature as the name Veľký jarok.

Trails and Routes

The Jelenie jamy educational trail was revitalised in 2025. It previously bore the name Moravany nad Váhom Educational Trail and was expanded into a 12.5-kilometre circular route with 460 metres of elevation gain. East of Moravany nad Váhom, the educational trail is accessible in the Striebornica valley; its starting point is in the Volavec locality, 300 metres beyond the Striebornica water reservoir.

Below the Sokolie skaly, the educational trail runs through an area where preserved thermophilous fauna and flora occur. The route thus connects a specific section of the landscape with the development of the present educational trail, without equating the former route with the revitalised trail.

The former “Moravany nad Váhom” educational trail was 5.3 kilometres long and had 340 metres of elevation gain. It was designated as a self-guided walking route open year-round and connected to hiking and ski routes.

Cyclists can also use a clearly described connection: the blue-marked cycle route 2208 begins in Moravany nad Váhom and leads via Výtoky to Nová Lehota. Its route uses asphalt, paved paths and forest roads.
