Ducové: Holiday Apartment, Kostolec and Great Moravian Heritage

Since 1990, a national pilgrimage to Saints Cyril and Methodius has been held regularly at Kostolec near Ducové every year at the beginning of July. This recurring event connects Ducové with a place where religious tradition, archaeological findings and Great Moravian architectural history come together closely.

Culture and History

Kostolec is a national cultural monument and is freely accessible to the public. At Kostolec above Ducové, there is a partially reconstructed Great Moravian magnate residence with wooden palisades, a gate and exposed foundations of a pre-Romanesque rotunda. The wooden structures and the gate are just as much part of the appearance of the site as the uncovered foundation walls. The magnate residence at Kostolec, built in the 9th century, is an example of an early feudal seat of the ruling class.

Archaeological investigations at the Ducovská Rotunda uncovered the foundations of a church with a round nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse. The form of the church building can be discerned from the preserved foundations. Fragments of plaster with remnants of paintings point to artistic fresco decoration inside the Ducovská Rotunda. The archaeological traces therefore include both the basic form of the religious building and indications of its former interior design.

Geography and Local Character

Kostolec is a limestone-dolomite spur rising 70–80 m above the Váh floodplain between Ducové and Hubina. Its geographical setting thus includes the distinctive rock formation, its elevation relative to the Váh floodplain and its location between the two villages. The eastern, older part of Ducové on the slope of the Inovecké predhorie is characterized by houses traditionally built from unfired bricks and rammed earth. This construction method describes a clearly defined historic part of the village and its traditional materials.

Trails

The Náučný chodník Kostolec Ducové educational trail leads from the center of Ducové to Kostolec. It is 1.1 km long, overcomes an elevation difference of 60 m and has a walking time of 1 hour. The route is linear and self-guided; the trail can be walked in both directions. It is designed for pedestrians and can be used year-round. The combination of trail length, elevation difference and walking time describes the route just as precisely as its linear layout and year-round use. The route is therefore described as a clearly defined educational trail: its starting point and destination are fixed, as are its length, ascent and stated walking time. The seven stations and two introductory panels supplement these route details with a fixed information structure. Self-guided use and walkability in both directions describe how the trail is organized.
