Janíky on the Malý Dunaj – Cultural Monuments and Nature

Janíky is located in the Danubian Lowland, in the northern part of the Great Rye Island (Žitný ostrov). Two prehistoric burial mounds in Dolné Janíky were declared national cultural monuments in 1966; they date from the Early and Late Bronze Ages as well as the Early Iron Age.

Geographical Location

According to the municipality, Janíky is located 17 kilometres from Bratislava on the Malý Dunaj. Culture

In Horné Janíky, a burial mound dates from the Early Iron Age and is currently not protected as a monument.

Csillagvár is classified in the monument register as an archaeological castle dating from the period after 1663. In the central register of the Slovak Monument Fund, Csillagvár is listed as a fortification or earthwork castle in Dolné Janíky, cadastral area of Dolné Janíky, under entry number 2065/1, dated 27 June 1966.

Csillagvár can be reached via a field path from the village in a north-easterly direction or along the Malý Dunaj from road II/503 in a north-westerly direction.

The Church of the Divine Heart of Jesus (“Kostol Božského Srdca Ježišovho”) was built in 1914 on the site of an earlier chapel in a style of historically understood Romanticism. The single-nave sacred space has a polygonal presbytery termination covered by a shallow dome. Nature

The “Malý Dunaj” educational water trail includes a station called “Janíky–Ostrov”. Several interesting and rare animal species live on the Malý Dunaj and in its immediate surroundings; numerous plant and mushroom species also grow there.

Traditions

The Shrovetide procession in Janíky takes place on the last Saturday before Lent. Its stated aim is to delight local people and preserve similar beautiful traditions from being forgotten.
