Lazy pod Makytou lies at the foot and on the slopes of the Javorníky Mountains. The municipality stretches for 14 km along the Biela voda valley – from Lúky to the Czech-Moravian border.

Nature

Part of the municipal territory of Lazy pod Makytou lies in the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Kysuce). The Čertov Nature Reserve is also part of this protected area. Brown bears, Eurasian lynxes and wolves find a habitat there. The landscape of the nature reserve comprises beech and beech-fir flowering forests, ravine forests with linden and maple trees, as well as spring areas of the hilly landscapes. Between forest types, spring areas and the slopes of the Javorníky Mountains, the natural diversity of the municipal territory is expressed in clearly distinct forms.

Winter and active pursuits

The SKI Čertov ski resort is located in the Čertov recreation area at an altitude of 600 to 900 m above sea level. Five ski lifts serve 5.4 km of pistes, and the ski resort also has seven runs. The area includes the Alpinka ski school, a ski equipment rental service and a ski service. For Nordic winter sports, Ski Čertov Javorníky additionally offers 15 km of cross-country ski trails.

The municipal territory can also be explored on two wheels outside the winter season. Route 5314 runs through the entire municipal territory from Lazy pod Makytou to the Čertov recreation area. The cycling route is 15.6 km long, is marked green, designated as a recreational route and laid out as an asphalt track. In Čertov, the Wellness & Spa Hotel Čertov*** offers beer baths as a wellness experience.

History and culture

The Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary in Lazy pod Makytou dates from 1801. It preserves bells from 1721 that came from an earlier wooden church. The Evangelical church was built between 1846 and 1859 on the site of an older Toleration church and features elements of Neo-Romanesque architecture. Its furnishings include a baptismal font from 1801 and a bell from 1802.

Over the centuries, Lazy pod Makytou has preserved its Kopaničiarsky character. This is associated with cattle and sheep farming as well as arable agriculture. The House of History in Lazy pod Makytou displays traditional costumes, household vessels, a spinning wheel, a loom, old skis, flails and historical photographs. Religious buildings, farming traditions and everyday objects from different periods thus stand side by side.

The Mladoňov memorial to the fallen is a national cultural monument. The Mladoňov educational trail deals with the burning of the Mladoňov settlement by fascists during the Second World War. In addition, the recitation competition “Kýčerského spievanky” is held in Lazy pod Makytou in memory of the poet Pavol Kokeš-Kýčerský.

Educational trail and orientation

The Mladoňov educational trail is a self-guided, linear hiking and cycling route that runs in one direction and can be used year-round. It is 1.1 km long and has an elevation gain of 42 m. Including the stops, the route takes approximately 45 minutes and comprises seven stations. It begins on the main road at the turn-off to the Mladoňov settlement, next to the memorial to the fallen and a bus stop.

Čertov can be reached by bus from Púchov railway station or from the stop by the post office in the direction of Lazy pod Makytou or Čertov. A 300 m-long footpath then leads to Chata Alpina.
