Holiday apartment in Horovce – coat of arms, castle and educational trail

Horovce combines an unusual living landscape motif with historic architecture. The Slovak national coat of arms planted from living trees covers 9.9 hectares and consists of more than 62,000 trees from 100 tree species. The area, number of trees and biodiversity give the motif a clearly perceptible scale. The castle, church and mausoleum add buildings whose dates of origin, forms and protection status are precisely identified.

Culture and history

The Vietoris family mausoleum was built at the beginning of the 19th century by Ladislav Vietoris senior. In 2017, it was designated an immovable national cultural monument. This gives the building a specific history of origin combined with a later official heritage designation.

Horovce Castle is a protected Renaissance monument dating from around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Its development can be traced back to a tower-like castle that was converted into a manor house.

The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity is a protected single-nave Renaissance church from 1627 with a rectangular floor plan and a semicircular ending. In the 18th century, it was extended with a presbytery and given a Baroque makeover. The interior includes a late Baroque painting of the Holy Trinity from the 18th century.

The Vietoris family mausoleum lies at the foot of Hôrka Hill; the Trinity Church and its grounds are also located on this hill.

The living coat of arms is surrounded by an educational trail. The educational trail surrounding the coat of arms made from living trees is 2,222 metres long and was opened on 10 September 2023.
