Holiday apartment in Veľké Držkovce – History and cycling routes

Veľké Držkovce combines a multifaceted local history with a landscape shaped by the Nitra Loess Hills and the Inovec stream. The municipality lies in the western part of the Bánovce extension of the Nitra Loess Hills and along the middle course of the Inovec stream. At the same time, several cycling routes pass through the nearby parts of the municipality and connect the area with the Považský Inovec.

Landscape

The route Okolo Považského Inovca runs between Čuklasovce and Zlatníky through Dolné Držkovce. Another route from Bánovce nad Bebravou to the Považský Inovec follows paved roads as well as field and forest paths and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. In addition, a cycling route from Bánovce nad Bebravou to the Považský Inovec passes through Horné (Veľké) Držkovce and Čuklasovce.

History

Dolné Držkovce has been mentioned as the settlement of Filips since 1232. Viticulture is documented there for the 16th and 17th centuries; pottery and furrier families are also recorded for 1673. Dolné Držkovce was a curial community of the noble Držkovský family, also known by the names Drskóczy and Draskóczi.

Several notable personalities are associated with the place. Ján Morvay was born in Dolné Držkovce and was a follower of the Bernolák movement. In 1831, he translated and published a guide against cholera in Slovak. The brothers Ľudovít and Mikuláš Dohnány were born in the former manor complex of Dolné Držkovce and were associates of Ľudovít Štúr. Karol Kmeťko was born in Dolné Držkovce in 1875 and later became Archbishop of Nitra.

Culture

A commemorative plaque at the former notary's office commemorates the brothers Ľudovít and Mikuláš Dohnány as well as Karol Kmeťko. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1931, stands in Dolné Držkovce. It is a single-nave sacred building in the historicist style, with a straight-ended presbytery and a tower positioned at the corner of the building. The church is considered to be well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose.

In Veľké Držkovce, the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary contains a Stations of the Cross with wood-carved stations by the local carver Karol Praženec. In Horné Držkovce, a chapel was built in 1900 by the noble Krejči family in thanks for the recovery of their daughter. This chapel was extended and comprehensively renovated in 2007.

Local life

A distinct local tradition is the Držkovská držka event. It has been held annually in Veľké Držkovce since 2012 and is organized by the HODOČU civic association. In the competition, registered teams from all over Slovakia compete to prepare the best tripe soup. Together with the viticulture documented in Dolné Držkovce for the 16th and 17th centuries, the region's culinary and craft history is therefore also among the place's specific themes.
