Holiday apartment in Veľké Chlievany – Culture and Traditions

Veľké Chlievany deserves a closer look: the village can be discovered through its landscape, culture and local traditions in several distinct facets.

Culture

The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Veľké Chlievany is one of the national cultural monuments in the cadastral area of the municipality. The heritage protection is therefore explicitly limited to this municipal context. A new church was also built in Veľké Chlievany at the expense of Count Gašpar Ilešházy. The two statements preserve different historical references and should therefore not be combined into a single building history.

The Múzeum Veľké Chlievany is associated with the birthplace of PhDr. Cyril Marián Guniš, built in 1890. The building was reconstructed for use as a museum. Another name in the local history is Juraj Palkovič: he lived from 24 April 1763 to 21 January 1835 and was the first translator of the Bible into Bernolák Slovak. A memorial plaque was unveiled in his honour in Veľké Chlievany. The first written mention of Veľké Chlievany dates from 1276. The documented local references therefore extend from the first written mention through the birthplace to the memorial signs commemorating important personalities.

Landscape

Veľké Chlievany lies in the Bánovce spur of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina on the right slope of the lower course of the Inovec stream. The Inovec watercourse flows through Veľké Chlievany. The geographical description thus combines a location on the right slope with the specifically mentioned course of the waterway through the municipality.

Traditions

Until 2020, the carnival tradition in Veľké Chlievany was maintained for ten years. This included „Pochovávanie basy“ in the evening. Events of „Stavanie mája“ were also held in Veľké Chlievany in 2018 and 2019. The years mentioned show that, in addition to the carnival tradition maintained for more than ten years, events associated with this other custom are also documented for two consecutive years.

Things to experience

Juraja Palkoviča Park was established in 1968 on the occasion of the 205th birthday of the distinguished Juraj Palkovič, who came from the municipality. The park has a children's playground, an outdoor fitness area and several benches for resting. Thus, three different facilities are explicitly named in connection with the park: a play area, an area for exercise and seating.
