Uhrovské Podhradie: Castle, Nature and Holiday Apartment

The ruins of Uhrovec Castle, dating from the 13th century, are located in Uhrovské Podhradie and are considered one of the most valuable Romanesque castles in Slovakia. The village therefore has a historic focal point that is closely connected with the paths and landscape of the deeply cut side valley along the Radiša stream.

Nature

The Strážovské vrchy Natura 2000 site includes the cadastral territory of Uhrovské Podhradie. The Rokoš National Nature Reserve also extends into this cadastral territory. It covers 4.6 km², was designated in 1974 under registration number 147 and is subject to the fifth level of protection. Rokoš, which reaches 1,010 metres, features forest and thermophilous plant communities. Together with the deeply cut side valley of the Radiša stream, this creates a landscape in which protected natural areas, wooded elevations and the settlement area stand directly alongside one another.

Culture and History

The ruins of Uhrovec Castle preserve a late Romanesque chapel and towers. Architectural elements from various construction periods include profiled windows, portals, vaults, bastions, as well as the surfaces and plasterwork of the building walls. The castle was open to the public seven days a week; admission was granted in exchange for a voluntary donation towards restoration.

The traditional rural architecture is also part of the character of Uhrovské Podhradie. The traditional architecture includes three-room houses with a living area raised above the entire residential section. From the courtyard, this area is accessed via a wooden staircase and a gallery. The houses are plastered and whitewashed and have hipped roofs with hard roofing. At the beginning of the 20th century, Uhrovské Podhradie was also a centre for producing wooden chests with box-shaped lids. They were used to store clothing and grain; the chests for clothing were decorated with incised geometric patterns.

Hiking

A green-marked hiking trail leads from Uhrovské Podhradie to Uhrovec Castle. At the end of the village, there is a car park by a large rock, from which the castle can be reached via this green-marked trail. Another marked connection is the 10 km-long Vojenskej päťdesiatky route. It begins in Uhrovské Podhradie and follows marked trails via Kňažinové lúky and Holý vrch to Jankov vŕšok.
