Borčany: Church, Landscape and Holiday Apartment

Borčany lies in the central part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina loess-covered hills, at the eastern foothills of the Považský Inovec. The landscape and the history of the village are closely connected here, giving this small Slovak settlement a clearly recognisable geographical profile.

Landscape

The Višňový potok plays a special role. It divides Borčany into two parts and has always formed the boundary between the Trenčianska and Nitrianska counties. At the same time, its course recalls an earlier political and local division: the stream formerly divided Borčany into the two independent settlements of Veľké Borčany and Malé Borčany. The present-day spatial division and the historical separation therefore belong to different chronological and conceptual levels of the same relationship with the watercourse. Direct bus connections to the district towns of Bánovce nad Bebravou, Topoľčany and Partizánske provide links with the surrounding region.

Culture

One of Borčany’s defining cultural landmarks is the Church of Saint Gall, Abbot. Its original Early Gothic church was built at the end of the 13th century. The present building is a late Baroque, single-nave structure with a tower, a rectangular floor plan and a straight-ended presbytery. The church was placed under protection as a national cultural monument in 1963. Its Early Gothic origins, late Baroque form and monument protection dating from 1963 thus together represent the site’s long architectural development.

The Dni Suchodolia event is also associated with Borčany. In 2016, it was held in the village for the 15th time. The recurring event title adds a contemporary local date to the historical and architectural points of reference.

Activities

The Areál Zdravia in Borčany has a multifunctional sports court. The Areál Zdravia also includes a shelter. The site therefore combines both an area suitable for sports and a simple built structure. A traditional table tennis tournament was also held in Borčany in 2022.
