Tvrdomestice: Bell Tower, Church History and Cycling Route

A wooden bell tower from the 19th century stands in Tvrdomestice; its bell was cast in 1740 by the Bratislava master J. Christelli. In 1990, the bell tower was extensively renovated, and the bells were also electrified.

This brings together an older craft tradition and a later renovation in a single structure. Alongside the other features of the village, the bell tower represents not only church history but also the passage of time reflected in a preserved village detail.

Landscape

Tvrdomestice lies in the northern part of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina hills and along the middle course of the Chocina stream. The predominantly deforested cadastral area is shaped by hollows and erosion gullies; in some places, there are oak-hornbeam forests with spruce and pine.

Thus, open areas shaped by the terrain meet individual wooded sections. The hills, stream course, hollows and erosion gullies describe different aspects of the local area; the tree species add the existing woodland sections to this picture.

Culture and History

The filial Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built during the tenure of Martin Medvec as administrator of the Prašice parish in the filial community of Tvrdomestice. On 26 November 2006, the Archbishop of Bratislava-Trnava, Mons. Ján Sokol, solemnly consecrated it.

Agriculture and fruit growing were historically among the occupations of the inhabitants of Tvrdomestice. In 1871, there were 15 potters there who also made clay pipes.

Reports of an alleged apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1947 in a forest near Tvrdomestice attracted very large crowds.

The history of the village thus ranges from church construction and consecration events through agriculture and fruit growing to pottery making. The reference to 15 potters in 1871 preserves a specific figure within this historical development, while the report from 1947 forms a distinct religious narrative.

Cycling

The blue cycling route no. 2101, “Okruh Duchonka”, is a regional circular cycling route that connects municipalities at the foot of the Považský Inovec and passes through Tvrdomestice. The circular route is 36 km long in total; 0.6 km of it runs through the cadastral area of Tvrdomestice.

The 36 kilometres indicate the complete loop, while the 0.6 kilometres define the section within the cadastral area of Tvrdomestice.
