Holiday apartment in Radošina: Renaissance church, wine and nature

Radošina lies on the border between the Považský Inovec mountain range and the Nitrianska pahorkatina hilly region. The village and its immediate surroundings combine a multilayered ecclesiastical and architectural history, the history of the Radošinské naivné divadlo, winegrowing and an extensive educational trail.

Nature

The slopes of Považský Inovec in the cadastral area of Radošina are predominantly covered by oak and oak-hornbeam forests. At 749 metres, Marhát is the highest peak. The Považský Inovec educational trail passes through the cadastral area. The self-guided route can be used in summer and winter, covers approximately 60 km including municipal branch routes and has a moderate to high level of difficulty. Its subject matter includes historical, cultural, natural science and nature conservation topics.

The Čertova pec natural cave is located near Radošina. It is considered the oldest human cave settlement in Slovakia and was declared a protected natural formation in 1981.

Culture

The Roman Catholic church in Radošina was built in 1636–1644 in the Renaissance style, is dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity, was given a Baroque makeover in 1755 and had an attached tower added in 1663. The single-nave building has a Renaissance barrel vault, a semicircular presbytery termination, a sacristy and a tower with a pyramidal roof and iron cross.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is located at the entrance to the church grounds. The Renaissance chapel already existed in 1636, was later given a Baroque makeover and is also known as the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. Beside the Church of the Most Holy Trinity stands a Lourdes grotto made of karst rock. It contains statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette as well as votive plaques, and was consecrated on 22 May 1949.

The Kaštieľ in Radošina is a two-storey, four-wing building with a closed inner courtyard and semicircular corner projections. It was built as a Renaissance structure in the second half of the 16th century and has served as the Nitra Diocese’s summer residence since its construction.

Theatre

The Radošinské naivné divadlo was founded in Radošina in the 1960s. Its first premiere took place on 25 December 1963; one of its founders was Stanislav Štepka. The club theatre of the Radošinské naivné divadlo hosted the premieres of “Jááánošííík” in 1970 and “Človečina” in 1971. The Klub mladých building preserves the interior of the Radošinské naivné divadlo’s first stage.

Wine

Pivnica Radošina mainly processes grapes from its own 33-hectare vineyard, located directly above the wine cellar. Pivnica Radošina’s Radošinský Klevner was served during a visit to Slovakia by Pope John Paul II or the Queen of the United Kingdom. Wine tastings are offered at Pivnica Radošina.

Transport

Radošina has had a railway connection since 1909 on the Nitra–Zbehy–Radošina line. Passenger services on the line are currently suspended.
