Holiday apartment in Podhradie – Castle and Považský Inovec

Podhradie lies on the eastern edge of the Považský Inovec mountain range, above the upper course of the Slivnica stream. Between the castle complex, protected natural areas and marked trails, the village combines different facets that can be usefully compared when planning a holiday region.

Culture

The defining landmark is Topoľčiansky Castle. Its oldest construction phase dates from the third quarter of the 13th century. Part of a ground-level room with a Renaissance brick floor has survived from the chapel. After the owners abandoned the castle in the 18th century, the chapel served as the parish church for the inhabitants of Podhradie. A window from the former chapel has also survived in a massive niche that is walled up in its lower section.

Above the former settlement of Hrnovce, from which Podhradie later developed, there is a limestone-dolomite rock. The village’s former activities are also part of its history: these included agriculture, weaving, lime burning and the production of wooden implements. In nearby Úhrad, visible remains of the original fortification and an earthwork have been preserved. From there, there is a view of Topoľčiansky Castle and its surroundings.

The castle tower can still be climbed today. From the top, views extend over the Nitra Valley, the Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges, and the Považský Inovec.

Nature

The Vinište Natura 2000 site (SKUEV0021) is located in the cadastral territory of Podhradie. It covers 5.80 hectares and is protected at protection level 3 to safeguard stands of common juniper. The landscape therefore appears not only as a wooded area close to the mountains, but also as an area with a clearly defined conservation function.

Trails

The Považský Inovec educational trail runs through Podhradie. It is self-guided, open year-round and laid out as a linear route. Its difficulty ranges from moderate to high; including the municipal branches, the trail is approximately 60 kilometres long. From Podhradie, a separate educational trail also leads to Topoľčiansky Castle, with a stated duration of no more than 10 minutes.

Panská Javorina can also be reached from Podhradie, where the ascent can begin. The described route initially follows a blue-marked trail through the village, then a yellow-marked trail to the Chatová oblasti Dolné Zľavy and onward to the Jamka saddle, where it meets a green-marked trail. A 16-metre-high observation tower with three levels stands on Panská Javorina.

Getting there

The bus stop is located directly below Topoľčiansky Castle, next to the church. Free parking is available beside the castle church. A regional bus service connects Topoľčany with Podhradie.
