Vacation apartment in Lužany – Landscape, church and archaeology
Lužany represents the interplay of landscape, townscape and archaeology. The village can be viewed both through its location below the Považský Inovec mountain range and through its written and archaeological record. The church, agricultural land and settlement traces belong to different, clearly identifiable aspects of the same municipal area.
Landscape and location
Lužany lies below the Považský Inovec mountain range and in the central part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina loess hill country. Its location thus combines a connection to a mountain range with its classification within a more specifically defined hilly landscape. The Hlavinka stream flows through Lužany. Outside Lužany’s built-up area, the municipal territory consists of fertile agricultural land. The agriculturally shaped areas therefore form an explicitly named component of the municipality. The Hlohovec–Topoľčany state road also runs through Lužany.
Church and townscape
In the townscape, the church “Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie” is Lužany’s dominant landmark. Its patronal feast is the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The church “Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie” in Lužany belongs to the Veľké Ripňany parish. This clearly connects both its full name and patronal feast, as well as its ecclesiastical affiliation, with the village.
Archaeology and history
The first written mention of Lužany dates from 1249. The archaeological traces in Lužany comprise several different groups of finds. In the territory of today’s Lužany municipality, a skeletal burial ground of the Nitra Culture dating from the Early Bronze Age has been archaeologically documented. A barrow burial ground of the Velatice Culture has likewise been archaeologically documented in the territory of today’s municipality. Lužany also contains archaeological sites of the Late Neolithic culture.
The settlement history includes an archaeological site in Lužany that was inhabited approximately around 2000 BC. The settlements in Lužany are referred to as the “Lužianska skupina.” More than 50 houses are characteristic of the settlements of the “Lužianska skupina.” The designation preserves the distinct classification of these settlements, while the number of houses identifies a specific characteristic of their form.
In the inventory of the tourism potential of the Topoľčany District, Lužany is listed as an archaeological site.
