Ardanovce – Nature, Trails and Culture

Ardanovce lies in a stream valley on the edge of the Nitrianska pahorkatina foothills, below the Považský Inovec mountain range. Landscape, trails, sacred architecture and traces of early settlement are all found close together in this one place. This means that a stay can be viewed from different perspectives: as time spent in nature, as a discovery of historic buildings or as an excursion into a settlement history reaching far back into the past.

Nature

The Náučný chodník Považský Inovec educational trail runs through the cadastral area of Ardanovce. Including the branches through the municipalities, the self-guided, branching hiking trail is approximately 60 kilometres long. Ten branch routes divide its course; it can also be walked in both directions and all year round. Its length, branches, direction of travel and season are therefore the defining features of this trail system.

The forests surrounding Ardanovce are suitable for recreation, walks and relaxation. The uses of these forests also include mushroom picking. Time spent in the forest and the educational trail represent two different ways of experiencing the landscape: on the one hand, quiet lingering and walking; on the other, a branching trail with a considerably greater overall length.

For planning a day, these nature-related activities can be considered separately. The educational trail offers a route structure with ten branches and two possible directions, while the forests are associated with recreation, walks, relaxation and mushroom picking. This keeps both a longer trail system and quieter landscape experiences in view.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Michael in Ardanovce is an important Late Gothic monument dating from 1503. The church preserves a stone holy-water font from the 15th century decorated with a mascaron. The construction date of the church and the older furnishing detail belong to different historical periods.

The rectory stands directly next to the church. It was built in 1787 and remodelled in the Classicist style in 1804. The building, holy-water font and rectory thus provide three different points of reference for the history of the village: a Late Gothic church building, a preserved detail from the 15th century, and a rectory with its original construction and later remodelling.

Early History

A prehistoric settlement with ceramic fragments has been documented on the left terrace of a stream between Ardanovce and Šalgovce. Its finds include stone tools and traces of structures. The settlement dates from the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods. The ceramics, stone tools and traces of structures reveal different groups of finds, while the two periods mentioned place this site within the history of early settlement.

Together with the church and rectory, this creates a chronological arc from the prehistoric settlement through the stone holy-water font to the Late Gothic monument and the Classicist-remodelled rectory. The historical themes remain distinct and can be considered one after another.
