Holiday apartment in Močenok: Kaštieľ, churches and nature

Močenok combines impressive religious buildings, historic architecture and protected landscapes with designated cycling routes. The village is home to evidence of religious history alongside natural areas such as Močenský Park and the Síky Natura 2000 site. Močenok thus reveals itself in very different forms: in church interiors, parks, pilgrimage sites and paths through the landscape.

Culture

In the historic centre stands the ensemble surrounding the former summer residence château of the Bishops of Nitra. It was designed according to Baroque principles of spatial composition. The Kaštieľ is considered one of the few authentically preserved rural aristocratic residences in Slovakia. Its preserved interior features from the 1840s include wall and ceiling paintings, wallpapers, wooden and mosaic floors, radiators and chandeliers.

East of the Kaštieľ stands the Baroque Church of Saint Clement. Its vaulted nave leads into a five-sided, domed chancel; the sacristies are also vaulted. The foundation stone was blessed in 1761, the church was completed in 1765, and it was consecrated in 1782. The Church of the Holy Cross was founded as early as 1729, while its present form dates from 1747.

Močenok Park also features a historic landmark: the Trinity sculpture was erected in 1851 out of gratitude for overcoming the 1849 plague epidemic. The reconstructed former convent of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Vincent houses the Museum and Gallery of Saint Gorazd. The activities there serve to promote devotion to Saint Gorazd. The original organ with sixteen stops from 1792 is still used during services in the Church of Saint Clement.

The Calvary complex in Močenok is a late example of religious complexes of this type embedded in the landscape. It consists of fourteen brick Stations of the Cross arranged in two parallel rows, the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre and a Golgotha sculptural group.

Nature

The Močenský Park protected landscape feature is a 5.87-hectare protected area in Močenok. It was designated in 1982 and is subject to the fourth level of protection. Located entirely in Močenok, Síky is a Natura 2000 site of European importance covering an area of 40.170 hectares. It protects lowland and mountain meadows for hay production, inland saline grasslands and salt meadows, as well as Pannonian salt steppes and saline grasslands.

Cycling routes

Two routes of different lengths, both classified as easy, are at the heart of the cycling network. The 4.1-kilometre cycling route 8142 – Duslo Connection links Čingov, Podbrehy and Duslo. It runs along local gravel roads and partly over natural surfaces. Cycling route 5130 – Štrkovec–Močenok–Jarok (Biskupský háj) passes through Močenok and is 22.1 kilometres long. It runs mostly along field and local roads.

At the Chapel of Saint Gorazd in Gorazdovo, there is an area designed for meditation. An earth embankment symbolises an open embrace that surrounds the chapel and welcomes the annual pilgrimage of the faithful.

For the period from 26 July to 1 August 2026, the 34th edition of the national Christian theatre festival GORAZDOV MOČENOK was announced in Močenok.

Getting there

Močenok has direct bus connections to Šaľa and Nitra. There is no direct connection to the railway network; the nearest railway station is in Šaľa.
