Holiday apartment in Dlhá Nad Váhom: Váh landscape and history

Dlhá Nad Váhom lies on the left bank of the Váh River and in the central part of the Danube Lowland, a lower-lying region of the Danube Lowland in southwestern Slovakia. The special topographical location is reflected in a narrow transverse ridge between the Váh floodplain and the floodplain of the Jác stream. Distinctive landscape forms and a multifaceted local history therefore come together in the village and its cadastral area.

Landscape

In the eastern part of the cadastral area of Dlhá Nad Váhom, there are interconnected flat sand ridges. They rise 1 to 3 metres above the surrounding plain and thus create subtle differences in elevation within the otherwise flat landscape. Former river arms of the Váh are also still visible in the surrounding area.

History

The settlement traces in the cadastral area span numerous eras: they date from the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Early and Late Iron Ages, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. The history of the use of the Váh is also documented in specific terms. In 1828, eleven mills were operating on the Váh near Dlhá nad Váhom.

Another connection to the early natural and settlement history was established in 1963. At that time, local resident V. Takács handed over two mammoth teeth, a rhinoceros tooth, a rhinoceros joint bone and a deer antler to the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Nitra.

Culture

Several monuments in the village commemorate notable figures and religious traditions. In front of the parish office in Dlhá Nad Váhom stands a carved wooden monument to Dávid Mészáros. He was born in Dlhá Nad Váhom, was a Roman Catholic priest and was executed in 1849 for anti-imperial statements. A memorial plaque for Alajos Izsóf, who was also born in Dlhá Nad Váhom, is located at house no. 111. He was a priest, editor, writer and traveller.

The village also has a Classicist roadside statue of Saint Florian from 1826. On the main road stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1890. A central part of the religious heritage is the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. It is already mentioned in a document from 1252. Today, it is a single-nave Empire-style building that was remodelled in 1899. The church is in good condition and continues to be used for its religious purpose.

Traditions

Forms of folk cuisine and annual customs from the period of the last hundred years can be reconstructed for Dlhá Nad Váhom. They are based on ethnographic and historical descriptions as well as residents’ memories. As a result, traditional foods and customs, alongside the visible architectural and field monuments, are also part of the village’s cultural character.
