Holiday apartment in Podlužany: Church, Vineyards and Customs

The Church of Saint Elizabeth is a Neo-Romanesque church built in 1897 on the site of a Gothic chapel founded in 1255. Thus, two clearly defined periods of construction are connected at this site: the founding of the chapel in the 13th century and the present-day church building from the late 19th century. Its interestingly designed interior contains a Baroque polychrome wood carving of the Crucifixion from 1749. The interior therefore combines the Neo-Romanesque church with an explicitly mentioned Baroque artwork.

Culture

The statue of Saint Urban was erected more than 100 years ago and restored and consecrated in 1999. It is a symbol of viticulture in Podlužany. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was restored in 1933 and restored again in the 1990s. It stands at the crossroads leading towards Hronské Kosihy. In the past, it was believed to protect the community from the Podlužianka stream overflowing. The two statues each have their own dates and a different local connection.

Customs

In Podlužany, Dožinky was a festival marking the end of the harvest work. Traditional home slaughtering included making sausages and cooking hurky and obary. A traditional celebratory practice after attending church included singing and dancing together. On the last night of April, decorated maypoles were erected in front of the houses of girls who had previously been splashed with water; another maypole stood in the centre of the village. The traditional customs thus comprise the end-of-harvest celebration, food preparation, communal festivities and a precisely described maypole custom.
