History

The Hrádze/Festunk hillfort was built and inhabited during the Great Moravian period in the 9th to 10th centuries. The hillfort covers 2.4 hectares. Kozárovce’s sacred architecture also combines several periods: the town is home to a Baroque cemetery chapel from the 18th century, which was redesigned in the Classicist style in the 19th century. The Church of St. Philip and St. James is a Baroque-Classicist church built in 1718. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Culture

Kozárovce is home to several music and folklore groups. The Hron theatre ensemble was founded in Kozárovce on 20 February 1949. The Lipka women’s singing group was established in 1974. The Matičiar men’s singing group was founded in Kozárovce in 1990 and made its first public appearance that year. The Kozárenka brass band was re-established in Kozárovce in 1991.

Matičiar is dedicated to folk songs from Kozárovce and the surrounding area and performs at various cultural and social events. Kozárenka regularly performs in Kozárovce at social, cultural, religious and commemorative events. Lipka also takes part in folklore events in its region, including Christmas events in Kozárovce.

The Konopa folklore ensemble bases the material for its programmes on research conducted in Kozárovce. It performs programmes about the harvest and a Shrovetide procession. The Praslica folklore group was established in 1965 as part of efforts to revive the traditions of Kozárovce’s ancestors. The local groups therefore represent different forms of singing, brass music, theatre and folklore side by side.

Wine and Events

The natural conditions make viticulture possible in Kozárovce, marking the northern boundary of wine-growing in Slovakia. Tastings of young wines are held regularly in Kozárovce. The Kozárovský jarmok, a fair featuring folklore and traditional handicrafts, is also held regularly. Wine, crafts and traditional performances come together as distinct elements of the local events calendar.
