Ipeľské Úľany – History, Church and Cycling Routes | Holiday Apartment

Ipeľské Úľany lies on the southwestern edge of the Krupinská výšina and in the headwaters of the Olvár stream, a tributary of the Ipeľ. South of the village, there are drier meadows and forest edges at an elevation of around 370 metres above sea level. The landscape and waterways thus form the geographical setting for a place whose history, buildings and community life are closely connected with its own development.

History

Ipeľské Úľany has been mentioned in written records under the name Fedemes since 1259. The settlement was destroyed by the Turks in the mid-16th century. After 1552, the inhabitants founded a new settlement elsewhere within the municipality. Historically, viticulture was also one of the activities of the inhabitants of Ipeľské Úľany.

Culture and Buildings

One of the village's defining buildings is the Baroque Church of Saint Michael the Archangel, dating from 1757. Preserved ruins of a Romanesque church from the 13th century remain; the Romanesque church was rebuilt in the 15th century. The ruins have been conserved and are therefore among the historic traces that have remained visible in Ipeľské Úľany.

The Csemadok organisation also contributes to the preservation of traditions in Ipeľské Úľany and organises various cultural and social events. The renovated cultural centre has tables that are also used by visitors during presentations on the history, sport and traditional culture of the municipality. Thus, alongside the preserved buildings, local association activities and the communication of community-related topics also form part of the village's cultural life.

Community Life

The annual cycle brings its own events. In September, Ipeľské Úľany celebrates the Feast of Saint Michael. Christmas community celebrations take place in December. The local amenities also include a children's playground, which is visited by preschool- and school-age children accompanied by their parents.

Cycling Routes

The Hrušov Circuit 2594 cycling route passes through Ipeľské Úľany. Another route runs from Šahy via Rybárik and Vrabčia Hora to Ipeľské Úľany; this route is suitable for MTB and trekking bikes. Both of the routes mentioned include the village in different cycling connections, while the route designation Šahy–Rybárik–Vrabčia Hora–Ipeľské Úľany explicitly lists the individual stops.
