Holiday apartment in Hronské Kľačany – churches, mill and cycling region

Hronské Kľačany combines sacred architectural heritage, water engineering, market traditions and a regional cycling initiative. Between the cemetery, Krížny vrch, the mill, the cultural centre and the railway stop, the village reveals several clearly distinct facets.

Culture

The first chapel in Hronské Kľačany was built in 1764 in what is now the cemetery. In its place, the original old church was built in 1784; it had no tower or bell and was dedicated to Saints Philip and James. The bell tower in the local cemetery was ceremonially unveiled on 7 July 2013; the bell inside it is also dedicated to Saints Philip and James.

Another chapter in the history of sacred architecture can be found on Krížny vrch. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built there in 1913–1914 on the initiative of chaplain Imrich Jonáš. Local winegrowers and residents of Podlužany and Hronské Kľačany took part, financing the construction from their own funds. The chapel contains a small stone altar and a Baroque-style statue of the Mother of God holding the dead Jesus, taken down from the cross, in her arms.

The Church of the Divine Heart of Jesus in Hronské Kľačany was built in 1930–1932. It is a single-nave church with a presbytery; a three-storey tower stands on the right side of the façade. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The local memorial heritage also includes a monument created by academic sculptor Stanislav Mikuš, which was ceremonially unveiled on 7 July 2002.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Hronské Kľačany, the Perec drainage canal, locally known as Kompa, was built in 1634. An old mill was restored on the drainage canal in the same year. The waterway and the mill are therefore part of a shared historical context dating back to the 17th century.

There is a public fire pit at the water facility behind the school grounds.

Local life

The Hodový jarmok takes place annually in June in Hronské Kľačany, including in the area around the mill. Farmers’ markets are scheduled to take place at the cultural centre of Hronské Kľačany in March. The market venues will also feature traditional craft demonstrations, as well as catering, restaurant services, fast food and refreshments.

Folklore is also associated with specific performances: the Hron folklore group performed in Krakovany and Piešťany in 1975, and in Myjava and at Fašiangy in 1976. Thus, alongside the buildings and the mill, events, crafts and regional customs also represent the cultural character of Hronské Kľačany.

Getting around

Together with Levice and Starý Tekov, Hronské Kľačany is a founding member of the Tekovsko-hontiansky cykloregión. One of the objectives of this association is to develop a cycling route connecting all participating municipalities.

For arrivals, Hronské Kľačany has a railway stop named Hronské Kľačany. Its own railway stop is therefore just as much a part of the village landscape as the churches, the historic mill and the planned market events.
