Hrkovce lies on the northern bank of the Ipeľ River. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1156.

Landscape

Hrkovce lies in the Ipeľská pahorkatina hills at an elevation of 125 to 205 metres above sea level. The Krupinka stream forms the eastern boundary of the village, while the Štiavnička forms its western boundary. The valley near Hrkovce is less than 3 kilometres wide between two mountain ranges. This brings together a riverside location, a clearly defined valley and the varied elevations of the hilly landscape.

History

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a Baroque-Classical church built in 1770. It survived the fire of 29 July 1808, in which Hrkovce was almost completely destroyed. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. This historic heritage is complemented by the Chapel of the Most Holy Redeemer, which dates from 1900.

Culture and community

The agricultural cooperative of Hrkovce manages 25 hectares of vineyards. There are wine cellars in the vineyards of Hrkovce. A statue of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers, holding a bunch of grapes, also stands there.

Community life is reflected in the Hrkovce summer festivities, which have been held annually since 1999. Every year, the summer festivities include a football tournament between single and married men at the local football pitch. Baňa is a natural amphitheatre in the vineyards of Hrkovce that is used for community entertainment during the summer festivities.

At the entrance to Hrkovce there is a recreational park with various climbing frames for children and benches for resting.

Getting around

Hrkovce has a railway halt on the Šahy–Zvolen railway line. The railway line passing through Hrkovce was built in 1899. There is also a bus stop with connections towards Šahy–Levice–Nitra–Bratislava and Šahy–Dudince–Zvolen–Banská Bystrica.
