Želiezovce lies in the Danubian Lowland on the right bank of the Hron – a location where history, parks and the river landscape come together.

Culture and history

The first written mention of Želiezovce dates from 1274. At that time, the place was mentioned under the name Selyz as a settlement with a church, a mill and a stone bridge. In the centre, the originally Gothic Church of St James preserves Gothic wall paintings dating from around 1430. Its altar base consists of a Roman sarcophagus from the 2nd century. The Esterházy castle is also part of the town’s history: it was originally Baroque and was later redesigned in the Classicist style.

The Želiezovský Park, a protected historic park area in Želiezovce, is also part of the historic townscape. Sovom zámočku houses the town museum and the memorial room dedicated to Franz Schubert. The archaeological exhibition of the town museum covers the Želiezovská culture as well as periods ranging from the Stone Age through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period to the Migration Period. A room on the upper floor is dedicated to the life and work of composer Franz Schubert and is furnished with pieces from his time.

Another historical connection leads to Franz Sacher. Count Ján Karol Esterházy brought him to Želiezovce as his personal chef; Sacher is described there as the inventor of the world-famous Sacher torte.

Parks and landscape

The F. Schubert Park is a 13-hectare protected area in the centre of Želiezovce. This park is home to a 25-metre-high protected pond cypress (Taxodium distichum), whose age is estimated at 200 years. The tree connects the protected park landscape with a single, precisely named natural feature.

Another large landscape feature extends into the town with the Čereš pheasantry. It is located in Želiezovce and covers 2,136 hectares. Riparian forests are characteristic along the Hron in the surroundings of Želiezovce. Thus, the townscape brings together the historic park area, the central F. Schubert Park, the extensive pheasantry and the river landscape with its riparian forests.

Events and river

The National Festival of Folk Art was founded in 1970 and added to the list of CIOFF World Festivals in 2018. A national folk art festival takes place annually in the F. Schubert Park. The park is open to the public throughout the year.

The Hron is also associated with a possible river section. On the Hron, the section from Jur nad Hronom to Želiezovce, and possibly as far as the Danube, can be completed.
