Holiday apartment in Viničky: Tokaj vineyards and the Bodrog

The Tokaj vineyards of Viničky stretch across tuff soils on the southern slopes of the Zemplín Mountains. In Viničky, the family of Count Július Andrássy owned large wine cellars, wine houses and a chapel in addition to the vineyards.

Culture and History

The Filagoria of Viničky is a preserved light fortification structure from the period of the First Czechoslovak Republic and is used as a lookout point. The Chapel of St. Joseph on the Andrássy family estate was built in the late 18th century in the Baroque style and is now used for Roman Catholic masses.

The female folk singing group Tokajský strapec was founded in 1972. It performs at various cultural events in the Medzibodrožie and Použie regions and, through its repertoire, strives to preserve the old customs and traditions of its ancestors.

Wine and Cuisine

Viničky is one of the villages along the Tokaj Wine Route where visitors can enjoy local gastronomic specialities in addition to wine tastings in cellars. The historic Zlatý Strapec cellar is a family winery in its third generation of winemaking and offers tastings in a medieval cellar with two tasting rooms.

The Zlatý Strapec tasting room offers Furmint, Lipovina, Yellow Muscat, sweet and dry Spontaneous, as well as Selection. The Zlatá Putňa restaurant offers Zemplín cuisine with traditional Slovak and Hungarian dishes, as well as various seasonal specialities.

The 11th edition of the Tokaj Open Cellar Day takes place in Viničky from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; access to the farmers' cellars includes a tasting of three wine samples each.

Nature

Borsuk lies in the northern cadastral area of Viničky and is a protected landscape area with thermophilic vegetation. An obsidian site was discovered in the andesite area of Borsuk.

The Tarbucka Nature Reserve was designated in 1986, now covers 148.98 ha and is subject to the fifth level of protection. Tarbucka is home to breeding birds and rare sand-loving vegetation, including the fringed pink and one of the few Slovak sites of the Hungarian pasque flower.

Tajba is a protected oxbow lake of the Bodrog and a habitat for an endangered European pond turtle as well as waterfowl.

Experiences

Boat trips on the Bodrog start at the harbour behind Viničky and travel as far as neighbouring Hungary. These boat trips include explanations of the river's special features as well as the flora and fauna of protected areas; Tokaj wine tastings and catering are available on board. The Horseshoe oxbow lake on the Bodrog River is suitable for fishing and boat trips.

As part of the Cross-bike project, Viničky provided eight electric bicycles, a charging station and a rest area. The public Cross-bike bicycle system in Viničky was made accessible to everyone. Also as part of the Cross-bike project, a 1.75 km-long cycle path was restored.
