Holiday apartment in Sečovce: Churches, city history and educational trail

Sečovce offers an informative introduction to the city's history, sacred architecture and historic sites of remembrance. A notable building is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, built in the Gothic style in 1494. Its tower reaches a height of 56 metres and shapes the historic perspective of the city.

Culture

Among the notable testimonies of the past is the Prícestná socha Piety. The stone folk Baroque statue dates from the 18th century and is listed as a cultural monument. Following its restoration in 1999, a copy of the Prícestná socha Piety was placed in front of the entrance to the Roman Catholic church. The original and the copy therefore represent different references within the historic cityscape: the statue is part of the traditional monument heritage, while the copy was placed in front of the church entrance.

The Old Jewish Cemetery is also part of Sečovce's history: it is the only surviving testimony to the city's once numerous Jewish community. Its historical significance therefore lies both in the preserved site and in the memory of a community that no longer exists in the same form today.

The newly opened Sečovce City Museum presents the history of the city. Its historical development is not limited to a single building, but appears at different locations and in various forms throughout the cityscape. The church, monument, cemetery and museum thus represent different ways in which the past is visible or conveyed in the town.

Routes

The educational trail Náučný chodník – Stratení susedia creates a distinct connection between the streetscape and remembrance. It leads as a walking route through the streets of Sečovce. Its route leads to preserved objects and also to places where historic buildings once stood and were later demolished. The trail therefore connects visible architectural traces with sites whose former buildings no longer exist today. Its route consequently includes both existing objects and places whose former buildings are now present only through their historical context.

Cityscape

Sečovce City Park was established in 1885 and redesigned into its present form in 2025. Information panels in the city park provide information about the city's history and its historic monuments. The year of its establishment, its present design and the information provided on site represent distinct chronological layers of this public space. As a result, the park brings together its 19th-century origins, its redesign in 2025 and the ongoing presentation of the city's history through the information panels.

On site

The historic townscape also includes the extensive cellars of Fischerov kaštieľ. Fischerov kaštieľ is the only surviving testimony to the old manor estate; its cellars can still be accessed from the Cultural Centre and the department store. The surviving manor estate and its cellars therefore stand in a particular relationship: while only this testimony remains of the old property, the underground rooms are still accessible from the two named buildings.

At the VN Sečovce reservoir, special vehicle regulations apply on the Zbehnov side. With immediate effect, it is strictly prohibited to drive cars along the shores or park there. Vehicles must be parked on the upper access road.
