Spisske Tomasovce: Holiday Apartment, Nature and Culture

In Spisske Tomasovce, striking rock formations, protected river landscapes and a multifaceted local history come together. Tomášovský výhľad is a terraced rock formation on the southern slope of Ludmanka at 680 metres above sea level. In some places, it rises approximately 145 metres above the Hornád River and is used as a climbing practice area.

Nature and Trails

The shortest footpath to Tomášovský výhľad leads from Spišské Tomášovce along a green-marked hiking trail. It initially runs through a meadow and then through a forest with a moderate incline. From Spišské Tomášovce, the viewpoint can also be reached via a cycle route. The route K Tomášovskému výhľadu runs from Spišské Tomášovce via Pri Tomášovskom výhľade to Ďurkovec. Along the way, it passes through an open rural landscape in the northern part of Slovenský raj and offers views of the Hornád Basin and the High Tatras.

The natural area includes the Prielom Hornádu National Nature Reserve. Since 1964, it has covered 290 hectares and also includes the cadastral territory of Spišské Tomášovce. The educational trail in Prielom Hornádu is open year-round, has 16 stops with 20 information boards, and is accessible from Čingov. The hike to Sovia skala is described as easy and comfortable and leads along good roads and paths; the steeper ascent must be tackled when climbing to Sovia skala.

Čingov in Slovenský raj

Čingov lies within the cadastral territories of Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce in the northern part of Slovenský raj National Park, in the third level of protection. The Čingov resort offers extensive accommodation and catering options, enabling activities in nature all year round. The resort can be reached from the Smižany and Spišské Tomášovce railway stops.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is listed in the Slovak register of immovable national cultural monuments under number UZPF 799. The present church was built in the first half of the 14th century in the Gothic style and extensively remodelled in the Neoclassical style in 1827. Next to the church stands a brick Chapel of the Holy Trinity, built in 1766.

A significant Slavic hillfort was located on the border of the present-day cadastral territories of Spišské Tomášovce and Smižany in Čingov. Archaeological excavations at the Slavic hillfort of Čingov uncovered several dozen residential and farm buildings. The western area of Hradisko I, also called “Pod hradiskom” or “poloha 3”, lies within the cadastral territory of Spišské Tomášovce.

In Spišské Tomášovce, there is a remnant of Kúria Tyba, which was the seat of the Counts Andrássy and the Bartsch family. Today, only ruins remain of the former Renaissance manor house in Hadušovce. The remains of a brick kiln or hearth have been preserved in the Kováčska vyhňa smithy. The Kováčska vyhňa smithy and the sýpka granary were declared monuments by Resolution No. 52 of the ONV Council of Spišská Nová Ves dated 22 March 1985.

Traditional Customs

The visit of the Betlehemci at Christmas is a traditional custom in Spišské Tomášovce. During Fašiangy, a procession with spit-roasted meat and music is organised in Spišské Tomášovce. On 31 May 2026, the statue of the Hadušovský Spišský Kopijník was unveiled in Spišské Tomášovce; it commemorates the tradition of the Spiš lancer communities and their knights.
