Holiday apartment in Spišská Nová Ves – culture, church tower and trails

Spišská Nová Ves has been designated an urban heritage protection zone since 1992. Historic buildings, regional art and various trails through forest and natural areas shape the destinations brought together here.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption dates back to the 14th century. Its architecture has been partially preserved in its original state to this day, although the church has been repaired and remodelled several times. The tower is 87 metres high and offers views of the city, the surrounding area and the panorama of the High Tatras. Guided ascents of the church tower are offered year-round by the Tourist Information Centre. This building therefore combines preserved historic elements with a clearly stated tower height and a guided-tour service available regardless of the season.

The Galéria umelcov Spiša primarily presents works by artists connected with the region. It also offers creative workshops for schools and themed workshops related to current exhibitions. The building of the Múzeum Spiša is likewise part of the city’s historic heritage: it is one of the city’s most valuable historic structures, while its foundations probably date back to the 15th century. Art presentations, workshop formats and the museum’s historical classification thus represent the city’s cultural themes in different forms.

Nature

The Banský náučný chodník in Novoveská Huta can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on skis in winter. The educational trail presents the mining and metallurgical history of the Spiš region and offers shorter and longer hikes in an attractive forest landscape. Thus, both the region’s industrial history and the available forest trails are central to the same route, without standardising the trail lengths.

The DIANA forestry educational trail in Novoveská Huta is managed by Lesy mesta Spišská Nová Ves. It is approximately 2,200 metres long and follows existing forest roads and paths. The Novoveské singletracks comprise two one-way routes: a children’s route of about 300 metres and the approximately 1.5-kilometre-long Novoveský Trail.

The nature activities in Novoveská Huta therefore differ both in their modes of travel and in their themes and distance details. The Banský náučný chodník combines mining and metallurgical history with shorter and longer hikes and specifies several possible modes of travel. DIANA is described as a forestry educational trail following existing forest roads and paths. The singletracks consist of two one-way routes, each with its own approximate distance.

For cyclists, the Východným okrajom Slovenského raja cycle loop is another of the listed options. It starts and ends at the railway station in Spišská Nová Ves and runs through the protection zone of Slovenský raj National Park. The route is therefore clearly classified by its specifically named starting and ending points and by the stated protection relationship.

Geographical location

Spišská Nová Ves can be reached by train and bus. Airports in the more distant cities of Poprad and Košice can also be used for the journey. The means of transport mentioned distinguish the city’s direct connections from the additionally usable airports in more distant cities.
