Holiday Apartment in Odorín – Church, History and Festivals

Odorín can be explored through its churches, historic buildings, a protected sandstone formation and recurring festivals. The history of the village is particularly evident in Kostol sv. Mikuláša, the Roman Catholic parish opposite the church and the Zemianska kúria so sýpkou building. This picture is complemented by Markušovský Hríb in the cadastral territory of Odorín and by events held in the village every year.

Culture

Kostol sv. Mikuláša is a late Romanesque to early Gothic church built in the 13th century, around 1270. Originally, the church was single-naved. In the 1380s, the vaulting of the nave on a central column gave it its two-naved form. This structural alteration is one of the defining details of the church's history and makes it possible to trace the development of the building over several centuries.

The furnishings of Kostol sv. Mikuláša include a late Gothic statue of the Madonna from between 1460 and 1480. It is located in the Marian altar of the side chapel. Another side chapel is Panny Márie Snežnej, dating from 1807. It has a ribbed vault and is open to the nave of the church through arcades. Different architectural and artistic forms therefore stand side by side in and around the church, from its late Romanesque–early Gothic origins to later additions.

The Roman Catholic parish stands opposite Kostol sv. Mikuláša. It was built on older Baroque foundations and remodeled in the Classical style in 1826. The relationship between the church and the parish is therefore also clearly defined spatially: the two buildings face each other and belong to the named sacred buildings of Odorín.

History

Another historic building is Zemianska kúria so sýpkou. The building was erected in the 18th century on older foundations and originally served as a manor house with a grain storehouse on the upper floor. Zemianska kúria so sýpkou has been fully reconstructed. The history of the village also includes a pivotal event of the 19th century: Odorín was one of the centers of the 1831 cholera uprising.

Nature

The protected Markušovský Hríb sandstone formation lies in the cadastral territory of Odorín. Its classification as a protected sandstone formation and its location within the cadastral territory are clearly identifiable natural features of the village. Thus, alongside the churches and historic buildings, the village is also associated with a distinctive geological feature.

Festivals and Local Life

Odorín holds an annual children's carnival with masks. Turíce, the Pentecost festival, is also celebrated every year by putting up a maypole. Both events are described as recurring parts of the local events calendar and connect the course of the year with visible customs in the village.

Beľušar is a recurring cultural and social event in Odorín. At the event on June 28, 2025, visitors could enjoy various specialties and goulash prepared for the occasion. Alongside the sacred and historic buildings, recurring social events and the food associated with them are therefore also part of the village's public character.
