Holiday apartment in Markušovce – manor house, castle and church

Markušovce combines a church with late Romanesque origins, the ruins of a medieval castle, a manor house with a museum exhibition, and Letohrádok Dardanely with the Markušovská dolina valley. The buildings mentioned provide the village with different historical points of reference, while the valley offers opportunities for hiking.

Culture

The church “Kostol sv. Michala archanjela” is already mentioned in 1280 and was originally late Romanesque. Its interior is predominantly Baroque in style. It is complemented by tombstones belonging to the Mariássy family from the 16th and 17th centuries, made of red marble. Markušovce is also home to the partially preserved and roofed ruins of Markušovský hrad, located directly within the municipality. The castle was built in 1284 and destroyed in 1527.

The “Kaštieľ Markušovce” manor house was built by František Máriássy in the Renaissance style in 1643. Its present appearance dates from a Rococo-style renovation carried out between 1772 and 1780. The museum exhibition in the manor house presents the development and various forms of furniture art and interior design in chronological order, from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The building itself brings together two named architectural phases: the Renaissance and the Rococo.

Markušovce therefore brings together different forms of historical heritage: sacred architecture, a fortified site, and a representative building with a themed collection. At the church, architectural history and tombstones appear together, while the manor house documents changes in furniture art and interior design over several centuries. The castle ruins complement this sequence with the preserved and roofed part of a former fortification. The sites thus differ not only in their architectural purpose, but also in the way history remains visible.

Collections

Letohrádok Dardanely was built in 1777–1778. The building houses an exhibition of historical keyboard instruments. Festive concerts are occasionally held there. The “Kaštieľ Markušovce” manor house and Letohrádok Dardanely form an off-site branch of the Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves. Both are located at Michalská 59, 053 21 Markušovce.

Landscape

The French Park in Markušovce is part of the village landscape. It is divided into three terraces connected by a stone staircase. The Markušovská dolina valley provides another clearly defined landscape feature: it offers opportunities for hiking.
