Holiday apartment in Krompachy – Trails, history and SKI Plejsy

Krompachy combines marked trails, winter descents and impressive evidence of ecclesiastical, industrial and commemorative history. Among hills, valleys, forests and meadows are destinations for active days as well as historic sites and living traditions.

Culture and history

The present-day Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist was built in 1774 on the site of an older church. In 2004, a memorial room dedicated to Mikuláš Šprinc and other notable personalities born in Krompachy was opened in the church building. The Evangelical Church of Krompachy was built from 1789 to 1791 on today’s Mikuláša Šprinca Street; a mining emblem is located above its entrance.

The Baroque manor house of Krompachy is also part of the historic building stock. It was built in the second third of the 18th century and remodeled by the Gundelfinger family in 1797. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk was built to commemorate the foundation of the Diocese of Rožňava, whose patron saint is St. John of Nepomuk.

The monument to the victims of the Krompachy Uprising is registered under number 1598/3 in the Central Register of the Slovak Monument Fund. It was unveiled in 1971 on the 50th anniversary of the event. Every year, the town commemorates the Krompachy Uprising and its six victims at the town cemetery and on Družstevná Street, the site of the bloody events. The Holocaust memorial stands on the site where the Jewish synagogue once stood.

Technology and history

The Stará Maša ironworks comprised a reconstructed original blast furnace, a new machine hall and a forge with a cupola furnace. Around 1,900 tonnes of pig iron were produced there annually. The hydroelectric power station on the canal of the Hornád River was built in 1889.

Trails and events

From Krompachy railway station, a one-hour hike follows blue- and yellow-marked trails to Plejsy. Another three-hour blue-marked route runs from Krompachy via Galmus to Poráč. Krompachy is also part of the signposted Gothic Route. The hiking trail network is equipped with signposts, directional information and indications of walking times.

Long-established events are also part of the local character. The dance festival in Krompachy has a long tradition and reached its 18th edition in 2026. The Turistický prechod Krompašskými vrchmi is a long-running hiking event that reached its 50th edition. The Nočný pochod Krompachy–Prešov is a recurring night hike; 130 hikers set off in Krompachy for its 52nd edition.

Winter, landscape and cycling

The landscape around Krompachy is characterized by hills, valleys, forests and meadows. The SKI Plejsy ski resort has nine slopes of varying difficulty. A green-marked cycling route also passes through Krompachy.

Traditions and regional cuisine

Pankuškové fašiangy is a traditional carnival event organized by the town of Krompachy. It included competitions for eating Pankušky and sausages quickly. For the 2026 edition, a tasting of traditional dishes from the Spiš region was announced, including Pankušky, Grajzupa, bean soup, peasant soup, cabbage soup, tripe soup, Liwanzen, apples in a dressing gown, sausages and langos.
