Arnutovce: Holiday Apartment, Church of Saint Helen and Local History

Those who discover Arnutovce first encounter the Church of Saint Helen and a multifaceted history of sacred architecture. The Roman Catholic church was originally Late Gothic and was built at the beginning of the 15th century. Since 15 October 1963, it has been listed as a national cultural monument. Its furnishings include a Gothic winged altar of the Virgin Mary, dating approximately from 1485 and attributed to Master Martin z Levoče, as well as a Rococo altar of Saint Sebastian dating from approximately 1770 to 1780. The church tower also reflects several historical construction phases: it was added in the second half of the 16th century and rebuilt and enlarged in the 18th century.

Culture

The individual dates place the church within a timeline ranging from its Late Gothic origins through the later furnishings to the alterations made to the tower. The winged altar connects the church with the art of the late 15th century, while the Rococo altar of Saint Sebastian represents a distinctly later period within the same sacred building. For public reference, the dating of the Marian altar remains approximate: it dates from around 1485 and is attributed to Master Martin z Levoče.

History

The history of the village extends beyond the church building. In 1366, Arnutovce was transferred to the Carthusians of Skala Útočišťa. After the Reformation and the dissolution of the monastery in 1543, Arnutovce became royal property again. In the cemetery of Arnutovce, double grave no. 47 contains the burial site of Štefan Hadri and his daughter Helena. Ľudovít Hadri – Ľuboslav is also recorded as a personality from Arnutovce who worked as a teacher, organist, poet and writer.

The thermal spring of Arnutovce is also part of the local tradition. It is currently not used for heat generation; the water flows freely into a receiving watercourse. A chemical analysis dated 11 September 1990 described the thermal water as weakly mineralized, sulfurous and lukewarm, and as suitable for a leisure pool. The current use and the historical description of the water therefore stand as two separate pieces of information.

Cycling

A cycling route section to Arnutovce is also described with specific terrain features. It includes a moderate ascent, a dirt road with changing surface quality and a mountain ridge with panoramic views. The route description thus mentions both the condition of the road and the course from the ascent to the higher section with its panoramic views.
