Geography and Transport

Culture and History

Budatín Castle stands at the confluence of the Váh and Kysuca rivers. The “History of Žilina” exhibition is located on the castle’s third floor.

Wire craft – handicraft and art – was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019.

Strečno Castle is open to the public as a preserved medieval ruin and has been a national cultural monument since 1970.

The folk architecture exhibition in Čičmany comprises two wooden houses managed by the Považské múzeum: Radenov dom and Dom č. 42. At Radenov dom, the exhibition presents stages of life, customs, work and occupational activities, nutrition, Čičmany’s architecture, as well as clothing and textiles.

A heritage reservation is located in the centre of Žilina; its core is Mariánske námestie, with typical burgher houses. Dom umenia Fatra is an Art Nouveau building that was formerly known as Grand Bio Univerzum. The premiere of the first Slovak film, “Jánošík”, took place there in 1921.

Fragments of František Thurzo’s Renaissance reconstruction of Lietava Castle, dating from 1558 onwards, have survived to this day, including arched attics and remnants of sgraffito decoration. The castle has been abandoned since the mid-18th century and deteriorated over 250 years to a structurally unsafe condition. It is a national cultural monument.

The Church of Saint Stephen the King in Dolné Rudiny is considered Žilina’s oldest monument; its oldest frescoes are almost 800 years old.

Rosenfeld Palace is a significant Art Nouveau monument from the early 20th century and is reminiscent of Vienna’s Belvedere Palace.

Experts consider the Neolog Synagogue a unique architectural monument.

Thermal Water and Events

Rajecká thermal water is classified as natural healing water with a medium mineral content and as water containing hydrogen carbonate, calcium and magnesium.

Aphrodite Spa uses the moderately mineralised Rajecká thermal water for drinking cures; its tradition historically dates back to the 19th century. The Aphrodite Water World has indoor and outdoor pools that use natural healing thermal water containing calcium and magnesium ions.

The Transport Museum in Rajecké Teplice takes part every year in preparing the Rajecká Anča event with a historic motor train and other transport technology.

Nature and Trails

Malá Fatra National Park is criss-crossed by numerous marked hiking trails. They range from easy walks and ridge hikes to more challenging routes with chains and ladders.

Jánošíkove diery, briefly known as Diery, are a system of gorges and canyons in Krivánska Malá Fatra, within the Rozsutec National Nature Reserve.

The Jánošíkove diery educational trail through Dolné diery and Nové diery includes waterfalls, ladders and wooden footbridges and is also suitable for families with children. It begins in the Biely Potok district; parking is available in front of Hotel Diery.

The Rajecká Valley contains several smaller protected areas and biocentres with rare vegetation.
