Nature

The Súľovské skaly are a national nature reserve within the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area, located about 10 km from Bytča. At the beginning of the educational trail through the Súľovské skaly, there is a paid car park on the main road.

The Javorníky Mountains border the area around Bytča to the west and offer year-round recreational opportunities, including educational trails, cycling routes, cross-country ski trails and ski facilities. Remains of a cave bear and traces of human settlement from the Stone Age were found in Šarkania diera. Travertine occurs at Hlbocký vodopád.

An educational trail in Bytča-Hrabové ends at a lookout tower. From the lookout tower above Bytča, there are views of the Strážovské vrchy, the Súľovské skaly, the Javorníky and Bytča.

Culture and History

Bytčiansky kaštieľ, also called Bytčiansky zámok, is a national cultural monument in the centre of Bytča near the Petrovička watercourse. A fortified water castle already stood on the site of today’s Bytčiansky kaštieľ in the 13th century; a new castle complex was built there between 1571 and 1574. The exterior of Sobášny palác is entirely decorated using the sgraffito technique.

The synagogue in Bytča acquired its present neo-Romanesque appearance through the activities of the Jewish religious community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is occasionally used for cultural purposes.

The Múzeum drotárie is open on weekdays by arrangement. It is a reconstruction of one of the oldest buildings in the centre of Veľké Rovné, carried out on the basis of a preserved historical photograph.

The ruins of Súľovský hrad date from the 15th century; they consist of an upper and a lower castle connected by a tunnel carved into the rock. Hričov Castle was built between 1254 and 1265.

Routes

The Kysucká cyklomagistrála begins in Kotešová at the junction with the Vážska cyklomagistrála and initially runs through Veľké Rovné to the Semeteš saddle. The 3.3 km route to Hričov Castle begins in Hričovské Podhradie and has an elevation difference of 228 m.

Súľovský hrad can be reached on foot from Súľov-Hradná via the red-marked hiking trail or the green-marked educational trail through the Súľovské skaly. Admission to Súľovský hrad is free.

Winter and Water

The Beskydsko-Javornícka cross-country ski trail runs through the Javorníky Mountains at elevations of 685 to 1,050 m; its main route is 50 km long. In the Bytča area, the Váh is used for rafting with rafts and boats.
